Nabs Two Marlin
Bob Williams, local sporting goods store owner, returned early this week after catching a 125- and a 150-pound marlin during a fishing trip in gulf waters near La Paz, Mexico.
He left here on the five-day trip with a party of seven Santa Ana men including Superior Judge Ronald Crookshank.
The party took two charter boats. Williams reported that his boat, with new captain and boat boy, caught four marlin the first day, two of which were brought

If my credit standing with the local hothouse operators existed, I'd order the biggest bouquet of long stem roses or a hundred choice-potted orchids for John O'Kane and the Anaheim Izaak Walton League for putting on one of the most wonderful youth projects ever staged in the confines of our fair city.
I'm speaking of the "Huckleberry Finn Day" that the local Ikes presented to the pint-size anglers of Anaheim and neighboring communities in La Palma Park on Saturday, June 11.
Despite the claims of the All-Year club of our wonderful climate and of the advantages of living here in southern California, we can not give our kids an old mill stream or a lazy creek where they can go with an old willow branch, safety pin, string and a tin can of worms and pit their skill against the wise and wary fish.
But here in Anaheim, thanks to the Ikes, the small fry were able to almost duplicate that age-old American boyhood art. What was lost in natural setting was gained in the quantity of fish and the prizes offered.
While up at the La Palma park casting pool, wishing I were under 12 years, I couldn't help but overhear considerable complaint about the done. And really—in the final analysis—what more of a reward is needed?
Gentlemen: I want to thank you for the fun I had at La Palma Park. I like to thank our helpers too. I wish we would have it again. I caught a little fish and gave it to a little girl. Sincerely yours, Andy Estrada, 1150 Perry Street."
Dear Mr. O'Kane: I think that "Huckleberry Finn Day" was wonderful. Last Saturday I think everybody in town was there. I hope you will have it again next year. But next time we hope the fish won't die. Sincerely yours, Dennis A. Adams, 749 N. Paulina Street."
Gentlemen. I had a wonderful time last Saturday at the Huck Finn contest. It was so nice of you men to do this for the schools of Anaheim. I thought the prizes were very nice although I didn't win one. I am sure everyone had a wonderful time like I had. Yours

OBTAIN LICENSE
A marriage license was issued to Jesse Herrera Macias of 1328 East Third street, Santa Ana, and Elvira Ruiz Leos, 907 North Paulina street, Anaheim, early this week at the county court house in Santa Ana.
Wheat was first planted in Virginia in 1611.
But here in Anaheim, thanks to the Ikes, the small fry were able to almost duplicate that age-old American boyhood art. What was lost in natural setting was gained in the quantity of fish and the prizes offered.
While up at the La Palma park casting pool, wishing I were under 12 years, I couldn't help but overhear considerable complaint about the delay and minor confusion that existed. Frankly it irked me, for I realized what a tremendous amount of effort had gone into this big event.
This one organization, in two weeks, with two successive events had focused national and area attention on Anaheim and had on top of that made quite a substantial contribution to our community life.
The Western States Casting tournament was acclaimed by all participants as one of the best in years. They're still raving about the lay-out, programming and hospitality that existed.
Hardly recovering from this event the Ikes went on to give our youth something to long remember and look forward to.
John O'Kane, Bud Paschall and Arch and John Henry went up to Hollenbeck Park in Los Angeles and devoted a day to catching fish. They were assisted by two state game commission men.
Shortly after placing the fish in the pool, it was discovered that the sun had heated the shallow water to the point where the fish began to die. Arch Henry then went to work and had 2½ tons of ice dumped in the pool.
At 6:30 Saturday morning, John O'Kane inspected the pool and found that considerable numbers of fish had died. He called the fish and game commission for assistance. Gene Beeman and his son went to the Whittier Hatchery and caught with hook and line some 85 fish and rushed them to La Palma. They had donated their day-off for this good deed.

Area Golfers Set For Public Links Tourney in July
Bob Roux and Sgt. Bob Bissett, USMC of Santa Ana, qualified in the preliminary firing for the U.S. Public Links championship last Sunday at Griffith Park in Los Angeles.
Roux is the 19 year old son of Williwick golf pro, Art Roux.
The final championship tournament, pitting the top public links golfers of the nation will be held on the new Rancho Golf course in Los Angeles, July 9-16.
Only Anaheim golfer to enter was Sgt. Barney Heidt, USMC, 9622 Valdina, Freeway Park, who withdrew from play after 27 holes.
Ray Young and Huston Keir, were both entered to play but failed to make an appearance.
Roux scored a 75-72 for a 147 and Bisset carded 75-77 for a 152.
The United States Military Academy, located in West Point, N.Y., was established by the Federal government in 1802.
John O'Kane inspected the pool and found that considerable numbers of fish had died. He called the fish and game commission for assistance. Gene Beeman and his son went to the Whittier Hatchery and caught with hook and line some 85 fish and rushed them to La Palma. They had donated their day-off for this good deed.
Providing the fish wasn't the only job. Over a hundred poles had to be prepared with nylon line and fish hooks. Assisting John in this chore were Marion and Arch Henry and Rosie Roseberry. Of course there were plenty of other Ikes assisting in the programming.
Just to set the record straight concerning the radio broadcasting over Stations KFOX and KXLA—there was no charge! Tom Reagan, announcer and originator of the original Huck Finn Day in Kansas City donated his time as did his assistant.
Tom devoted the better part of the day to directing the event. The only charge made was a $125 bill to the telephone company for lines used in hooking up with the radio station. This money was donated by the Chamber of Commerce and the Ikes, Kiwanis, Lions, Optimists and Rotary clubs.
Did I say unappreciated work? Well it wasn't unappreciated by the 1000 kids who in many instances caught their first fish. Below are a few of the many letters received by the Ikes in heartfelt thanks for a job well
Fullerton Nips Anaheim, 2-0
In a tight pitcher's duel last evening at La Palma park, the Fullerton legion team emerged a 2-0 victor over Vic Ruedy's American Legion nine.
Rudy Casilla who's curve ball artistry had the locals baffled, hurled a one-hitter and sent 14 batters down via the strike-out route.
His performance was matched by fourteen-year old Steve Casperson who allowed two hits, two runs (unearned) and struck out seven.
Fullerton scored their tallies in the fourth when Don Hudson drew a walk and scored on Duane Pennington's triple to deep center field. Pennington scored from third when Ronnie Lemcke tossed the relay over Minard Duncan's head.
Joe Bruce's single to left was on the lone bingo for the locals in the game played under the lights.
Only three extra batters faced Casilla in the seven inning contest. Casperson was in serious trouble in the third inning when the winners crowed the sacks with a brace of walks and an error, but then were unable to score.
