State Realtors Ask Congressional Investigation of Truman’s Charges
Editor's Note: The following news release was submitted for publication by the Anaheim Realty Board.
California realtors yesterday struck back at President Truman’s charges against the “real estate lobby” in Washington by demanding that Congress make a full investigation into the subject matter of the president’s charges.
The demand was contained in telegrams sent to Congressmen Carl Hinshaw, Pasadena, and Hubert B. Scudder, Sejastopol, former state Assemblyman and real estate commissioner, both of whom are realtors, and in a letter of protest to the president signed by W. Ed Wallace, Oakland, president of the California Real Estate Association, and Eugene P. Conser, San Marino, state Secretary.
‘Whipping Boy’
“We seem to have been singled out as a ‘whipping boy’—the object of scurrilous public attacks which are in ‘such generalized terms as not to give us an opportunity to protect ourselves,’ Wallace said.
“Coming at this time, when a vitally important decision on public policy with respect to the future of home ownership in this country is to be made, the charges of the president reflect also upon the integrity of members of Congress who will have to cast their votes publicly in making that decision. The charges can be interpreted,” he said, “as a desperate effort to coerce members of Congress into voting against the viewpoint we represent and to overcome congressional opposition to the socialized housing bill now ready for consideration.”
Specific Charges
In asking for a congressional investigation, Wallace requested that the president be asked to furnish Congress with a bill of
Specific Charges
In asking for a congressional investigation, Wallace requested that the president be asked to furnish Congress with a bill of particulars naming the persons against whom the charges are made. "If these charges can be made specific," he said, "and are found to be true, then the conditions should be corrected. If untrue, then we should be absolved and the charges should cease."
In his letter to the president, Wallace suggested that "your advisers must have misled you as to the true content of this bill, thus causing you to issue an analysis of the bill which is erroneous and which so seriously distorts the facts that it constitutes a grave misrepresentation to the people."
Oppose Socialism
Study of the proposed housing program contained in the bill, Wallace said, shows that it "involves costs to the Federal government of upward of $19 billions." The computation is simple arithmetic that anyone can determine.
Wallace called for a complete congressional investigation on the basis that "if our representatives in Washington have done or are doing anything unlawful or unethical, we are as interested as are you in having the situation corrected." The charges always have been generalized without mentioning any persons involved, Wallace said, thus reflecting discredit on those actively engaged in the real estate business although possibly intended to apply to persons only distantly concerned in realty operation.

Demand for Fair Exhibit Space
Merchants, manufacturers and distributors of Orange county are being urged to make arrangements, at the earliest possible date, for their commercial and industrial exhibit space at the coming 1949 Orange County Fair being staged at the former Santa Ana Army Air Base site, August 18-21, inclusive.
The expected large attendance for the coming Orange County Fair is responsible for the heavy demand for commercial and industrial exhibit space, according to Glenn N Woolley of Fullerton, member of the fair board and committeeman for this class of exhibits, who urges exhibitors to place their space orders early.
L. A. (Dan) Patch, manager of the fair, states that ample arrangements are being made to handle the large number of commercial and industrial exhibitors and to give them every opportunity to display their wares to visitors.
Manager of the commercial and industrial exhibit space is Frank M. Miller of Orange who has been contacting exhibitors throughout the county during the past few weeks. Miller may be contacted, or additional information secured by writing to him at the Orange County Fair, 20391 Newport Blvd., Santa Ana. Phone Kimberly 2-2384.

Leader of the assembly economy bloc. Jonathan Hollibaugh favored more cutting of the budget. According to Hollibaugh, the house should "get a little more water out of it." Hollibaugh was supported by Julian Beck, San Fernando, democratic floor leader.. One assemblyman, Laughlin
Waters, Los Angeles, admitted frankly he is "sick and tired of listening to discussion on this thing." He accused those who refused to vote it out of the assembly of refusing to propose any specific suggestions on how the budget could be further cut.
