"Checy Your Car; Check Accidents" Offer Continues
Anaheim motorists still have two weeks to take advantage of a free check of their autos by the new car dealers of the city.
The "Check Your Car—Check Accident" campaign is the contribution of the local new car dealers to the National Safety Council's "Operation Safety" program.
According to Lonnie Hull, president of the Los Angeles association, approximately one-third of all cars which have been safety checked by southern California new car dealers have proven to have some mechanical defects.
Lighting defects account for about half of this figure with tail and stop light failures predominating, although many cars with partially burned-out headlights have been discovered.
Poor brakes, including faulty hand brakes, rate next with 13.8 percent of the defective autos found equipped with inadequate stopping facilities.
Worn or defective windshield wipers account for 9.2 percent of the unsafe items while 8.7 percent of the horns needed repair.
Only 5.7 percent of the defective items were tires which were deemed unsafe for further use.
