SPORTS Anaheim Golfers In Prelim Firing At Griffith Park, Sunday For U.S. Public Links Championship In July Three Anaheim golfers will be firing in the southern California sectional qualifying tournament Sunday at Griffith Park for the U.S. Public Links Golf championship to be held in Los Angeles next month. Entered are Raymond B. Young, 7232 Raymond avenue; Sgt. Barney Heidt, USMC, 9622 Valdina, Freeway Park; Huston Keir, 720 North Sabina street. Other area golfers entered include: Bob Roux, son of Willowwick golf pro, Art Roux; Capt. Fred MacManus, USMC; Sgt. Jack Davidson, USMC; Sgt. Robert Bissett, USMC—all of Santa Ana. New Rancho Course Under leadership of a tournament committee of outstanding golf leaders of which Maurie Luxford, president of the L.A. City Recreation and Park Commission is chairman, arrangements are being completed for the first holding in Los Angeles of the 23rd annual Publinx championship at the new Rancho Golf Course, West Pico Blvd. and Patricia Avenue, July 9 to 16. The greatest public links players in the nation will be drawn to this event, which is one of the top flight annual championships of the United States. Mark Official Opening Interest has been greatly heightened. Hilton, Trapp Named to All-League Team Two Colonists, Bob Hilton and Lloyd Trapp were named to the All-Star Sunset League baseball team by the league's coaches last Friday evening. Hilton played both pitcher and catcher during the season while Trapp has played in the infield. Hilton was picked as utility outfielder and Trapp was selected as second baseman on the all-star nine. The Orange Panthers, league champions, dominated the selections with three players—Fullerton and Newport Harbor placed two Red Sanders to Address County Bruin Club Orange County's Bruin Club is presenting to all Alumni, friends of the University, and guests Henry "Red" Sanders, UCLA's head football coach, at the Summer Reception-Affair to be held in Santa Ana's Community Center Club House Wednesday, June 29 at 8:00 p.m. it was revealed today by Fred Huber, local Bruin Club chairman. The affair which also will be attended by Wilbur Johns, director of athletics; Paul R. Hutchinson, UCLA alumni association president, and Victor Hanson, regent of the University is to introduce UCLA's new mentor "Red" to all local alumni and friends of the University of California at Los Angeles. During the evening Sanders will address the local group regarding his football problems and prospects. All alumni and friends in the community interested in attending this summer highlight are urged to make reservations by June 20 through contacting: Bob Corfman, Santa Ana KI 2-3005; Tom Stamp, Laguna Beach 1-5573; or F. Purchase of the land and construction of a nationally outstanding golf course was entirely financed out of revenues from other Los Angeles city-operated golf courses. Official dedication of Rancho Golf Course has been set by the City Recreation and Park Commission for Friday, July 8, at 4 p.m. Pre-Season Ticket Sale With golfing enthusiasts eager to see the new Rancho course in action when public links stars trade shots for the national title, pre-season tickets for the Publinx tournament were placed on sale this week. The tickets will enable fans to see the entire national event, July 9 to 16, for only $3.00. After the pre-season ticket sale, it will cost fans $1.00 for each of the seven days to see the tournament. The pre-season tickets may be purchased now at all golf clubs and courses and at leading sports shops throughout the Los Angeles area from Santa Ana to Ventura. Thatcher Named Athlete of Year Gerald Thatcher has been voted the athlete of the year at Anaheim Union high school by members of the school's Varsity "A" Club. Thatcher won varsity letters in football, basketball and track in his senior year. He was first string guard on the basketball team and was one of the league's top scorer. He gained an honorable mention on the All-Sunset team. While beating the cinder circuit this year, Thatcher broke Jerry Shipkey's shot put record in the Bee division. Scuttlers Tackle Galloping Ghosts The Anaheim Scuttlers of the National Niteball League tackle the Galloping Ghosts, a colored team from Ogden, Utah, Friday evening, June 17 at La Palma park. Billed as the craziest softball team in the world and having a lineup that reads like a vaudeville cast, the Ghosts are noted for their screwball antics as well as a team of top class ball players. Admission is 50 and 25 cents with the contest starting at 8:15. FORMER RESIDENT VISITING HERE Mrs. Lenore Anderson of San Jose, daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Anderson, 1114 Diamond street, Anaheim, has been enjoying the local couple's hospitality and visiting many other friends here. She planned to conclude her two week vacation here last week. Gladiolus Show This Weekend Several flower fanciers from this area will enter exhibits in the third annual gladiolus show to be held Saturday and Sunday at Brookside Park, Pasadena, under the auspices of the Southern California Gladiolus Society. Commercial grower exhibits, single and three spike specimens and a splendid group of artistic arrangements will fill the large four buildings of the Fannie E. Morrison horticultural center, society spokesmen remarked. Members of the society predict that this show will be one of the finest gladiolus exhibitions ever staged in the southland and one of the best showings in North America, this season. Exhibitors planning to display entries from this area include Mr. and Mrs. Guy T. French, 758 North Clementine街,Anaheim,and R. D. Fordham and Ray Baldwin,both of Fullerton. FISHING TRIP TO ENSENADA A quartet of Anaheimers tried their piscatorial skill at Ensenada, Mexico, over the weekend. Those fishing were Miss Edith Browne and her fiance, Joe Schuman, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Wilson. Miss Browne, well known vocalist, is recovering from a case of strep throat contracted in Baja, California. Thatcher won varsity letters in football, basketball and track in his senior year. Chief Johnson stated the reason for his resignation was lack of cooperation in backing up his decision to discipline an insubordinate officer. Johnson has been chief of police of La Habra for the past seven years. Westmont College of Santa Barbara recently purchased 48 acres in the Imperial Ranch tract near here. The La Habra city council voted special consideration for the school, granting it the use of city water. Heretofore it has been the policy of the council to require annexation before granting water. The student body of the college, now limited to 300, is co-educational, and religious training is included in each student's program. Rev. Paul Kirk, pastor of Compton Baptist church, will be the new pastor at Temple Baptist church here, beginning July 1. Following service as a chaplain in the army during the war, Rev. Kirk served as pastor of a church in Honolulu. In addition to holding pastorates in San Francisco, he taught for seven years in the Bible college at Louisiana seminary. Married, Rev. Kirk has two children, Paul, Jr., 11, and Leah Sharon, 4. Miss Phyllis Ann Conner, 535 South Hiatt, La Habra, was honored recently at a dinner party in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Conner of Yorba Linda, at which time announcement was made of her engagement to Ray Roberts of Orange. The wedding theme, as both of the young people are graduating from Whittier college this June. Miss Steele graduated from Cotey Junior college, Nevada, Mc where she was house council president, student body vice-president, member of Delta Psi Omega and campus queen—All Around Girl. At Whittier college she was president of Delta Phi Upsilon, member of the Athenian society and 1948 football queen. Mr. Mastian attended Compton Junior college where he was a Tartar Knight and member of Beta Phi. He graduated from Northwestern University, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi. During the war he was an ensign in the Navy. At Whittier college he was a rally committee chairman and member of the Orthogonian society. Of registration. The business was originally purchased by the late Mr. Joe MacNamara from James and Evelyn Bainum, former owners. Upon returning to Casper, Mr. MacNamara suddenly passed away. Bill MacNamara, brother of the late Mr. MacNamara is managing the store. The MacNamaras are living at 815 North Janss street. Report One Polio Case in County Sacramento, (WNS)—The state department of health listed 17 additional cases of polio in California last week, according to a report issued today. These were as follows: Fresno county, 1: Humboldt county, 1; Kings county, 1; Los Angeles county, 6; Orange county, 1; San Diego county, 3; San Mateo county, 2; Solano county, 1 and Tulare county 1.
