In making the presentation, Reinhard lauded the students on their ability to design and construct a five-room house within the student year. Dr. H. Lynn Sheller, Dean of Men, and Logan W. Wheatley, technical trades department head, accepted the locks for the college. "We are happy to receive these KwiKset Locks because their increasing use makes it necessary that our students be familiar with their installation," Wheatley said. Fullerton Junior College is said to be the first institution of its type to design and build a complete five-room home each student year. Upon completion, the home is awarded by lot to a student in the construction trades department for the cost of the materials. KwiKset Locks, Inc., also makes other builders hardware including window latches, drawer pulls and cabinet hinges. The firm is one of Anaheim's newest industries. That's one way to stay in the black ink, just omit $3 billion expenditures! I rise to remark that we cannot impose more taxes on the patient and suffering taxpayers. There is a saturation point beyond which increased taxes bring no more money. There is only one way to prevent more taxes; stop spending more than we take in. There is only one way to stop spending more than we have; cut the unnecessary and duplicating expenditures, and spend the people's money for the things of the greatest urgency. We estimate here that the present program, without the social suggestions of the President (socialized medicine, federal aid to education, the housing racket, and a few others) will mean a deficit of $11 billions in fiscal years 1949 (the present year), 1950 (the one starting July 1st), and 1951. Remember, $77 for each person, $300 per family, more for the 22nd District of California. The efforts you make to acquaint people with the need for the adoption of Hoover Commission's recommendations for economy will lessen the drain on your own pocketbook, and help save the Republic for your children. WASHINGTON AS SEEN By Congressman JOHN PHILLIPS In this office, the postman doesn't stop to ring twice; he just walks in and dumps a bushel of mail on the desk, and walks out. One of the pieces in the "Daily Statement of the United States Treasury." It doesn't sound very exciting, and when you look at four long pages of small-type figures, it doesn't look very inviting, but it has a closer relation than you think to the future of representative government. Let's look at a little item on page 2. "Income tax withheld by employers." For the first week in June, $106133,176.64, and for the same week a year ago, $107,236,-154.21. A million dollars in one week. No matter why; it's a million less. For the fiscal year, to date (three weeks short of the full time) without giving figures, short $1.5 billion. Then turn to page 3, about half way down: "Expenditures, Unemployment trust funds, Withdrawals by states." For the first week in June $45.4 millions, and for the same week last year $16.8 millions. That's an increase of $29 millions. In one week. For the fiscal year to date, an increase of $400 millions. That's an increase in unemployment. Men and women who don't work, can't pay taxes. Government is paid from taxes. Finally, turn back to page 2, near the bottom, "Budget surplus or deficit." It's still in the black, but it's only $857 millions, and a week ago it was a billion, and a couple months ago it was several times that. Wait a minute, what's this little reference under the total? "Expenditures to date exclude $3 billions spent from E. C. A." To Farmers and Small Business Firms Your bookkeeping can be done by mail. Our service will . . . 1. Keep your books. 2. Furnish you with trial balance and profit and loss statements each month. 3. Provide you with necessary business figures for your Federal and State income tax returns.
