SPORTS Expect 50,000 Track Fans At Los Angeles Coliseum Relays Friday Southern California track fans will be outfull force tomorrow night (Friday) when the ninth annual Los Angeles Coliseum Relays are held in Los Angeles. Last year's meet, highlight of an Olympic year, drew in excess of 60,000 enthusiastic spectators, and firmly established the Coliseum Relays as the nation's top invitations meet. This year's attendance should go near the 50,000 mark. One of the star attractions, of course, is the Dutch housewife, Fanny Blankers-Koen, who has flown here from Holland to appear in three events, but, with an entry list that includes more than 15 Olympic competitors, sports fans will have an opportunity to see the mightiest efforts of virtually all of the country's leading stars. Every effort has been made to get the top people available in every event. Needless to say this has been accomplished with such individual stars as quarter milers Herb McKenley and Dave Bolen, sprinter Lloyd LaBeach, hurdlers Harrison Dillard and Craig Dixon, high-jumpers Vern McGrew and Bob Walters, Moose Thompson and Otis Chandler in the shot put, Fortune Gordien and Taylor Lewis in the discus, Lorenzo Wright, Fred Johnson and schoolboy George Brown in the broad jump. Relay teams include Oklahoma A & M, Wayne, U.C.L.A., Michigan State, U.S.C., Texas A & M, arrests were made, with fines totaling $22,516. Errant sportsmen spent a total of 405 days in jail. The monthly fine record is $4,-820 higher than the 1948 total. Inland fishing violations accounted for 121 cases, while 94 clam and ocean fishing violators were apprehended during the month. Wardens nabbed 54 hunters for waterfowl violations, and 43 out-of-season deer hunters. Tennis Team Plays Compton In Play-Off Anaheim's tennis team, this year's Sunset league champs, are slated to meet Compton in the quarter-finals of the C.I.F. playoffs this afternoon, Thursday, May 19. The match will be played on Compton's courts. The match was rained out at Anaheim on Tuesday with the locals holding a 7-4 edge—four stars as quarter, milers Herb McKenley and Dave Bolen, sprinter Lloyd LaBeach, hurdlers Harrison Dillard and Craig Dixon, high-jumpers Vern McGrew and Bob Walters, Moose Thompson and Otis Chandler in the shot put, Fortune Gordien and Taylor Lewis in the discus, Lorenzo Wright, Fred Johnson and schoolboy George Brown in the broad jump. Relay teams include Oklahoma A & M, Wayne, U.C.L.A., Michigan State, U.S.C., Texas A & M, Rice, California, Stanford, Compton, Pepperdine, and the Los Angeles Athletic club. In addition, Los Angeles City College, Compton, Pasadena, and Riverside College will run in a special College two-mile relay. Fans naturally are anxious to see Fanny Blankers-Koen, but the real track addicts will be there to see such personal duels as the Dillard-Dixon in the hurdles, Thompson-Chandler in the shot, the high jump with six entrants over 6-ft. 6-in., the broadjump with four 25-foot leapers, and the McKenley-Bolen match in the quarter. In the latter event, however, Coach Payton Jordon is high on the chances of his ace, "Bullet Bill" Parker, who finished only a stride behind the other two Compton Relays last year. Naturally cautious, officials of the sponsoring Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games are not predicting any world marks will fall, but some experts declare there is a strong possibility the two-mile relay mark may be shattered. It's bound to be a bangup battle between Michigan State, U. S. C. and Oklahoma A & M. Tickets for this sensational meet, which also includes the championship competition among Los Angeles high schools, will be available at the Coliseum box-office.
