Expect Large Florida Crop Except for Florida, citrus crops will be down this year from the preceding year and California growers will be the hardest hit, it was announced today by the California crop and livestock reporting service. Production of oranges, all types, in California is expected to reach 733,000,000 boxes, as compared to 45,000,000 last year, the approximate 1130 acres in Orange county yielding decreased returns due to cold and frost. Citrus Crops Decline The service notes that production of oranges in Arizona, Texas, and Louisiana will also be lower because of extreme winter cold, but that the crop will be larger in Florida. Grapefruit production is expected to decline in all states. The service noted that in California the situation is practically the same as that in the report of February 1. During February there were some cold nights in which growers were again forced to use heated equipment. Costs Rise The harvest of the navel crop has been going forward steadily, but costs are rising due to the necessity of separating good and damaged fruit. Extent of losses to the valencia crop, also summer grapefruit, will not be known for a few weeks when the harvest of that variety gets underway. Total production of oranges in all states is expected to reach 103,830,000 boxes, as compared to 114,380,000 boxes the preceding year. The grapefruit harvest is set at 46,050,000 boxes, down from 61,630,000 the year before. Reduce Cost of Books, Materials In Night School The assembly this week passed two bills affecting the cost of books and materials used in adult instruction. One measure would allow school districts to sell at cost any materials used in adult craft classes. Assemblyman Francis Dunn, author of both bills, assured legislators that passage of the measure would result in considerable savings to students who are now required to buy all materials from retail sources. The second measure would allow school boards to loan required textbooks to adult-students after receiving a deposit sufficient to cover cost of the books. Present law requires the books be bought. HEARING FOR EXTENSION OF FISH AND GAME COMMISSION'S POWERS SET A hearing on the proposal to further extend the plenary powers of the California Fish and Game Commission was set for March 22, Senator George J. Unemployment Insurance Claims Take Heavy Jump Another heavy jump in unemployment insurance claims for the week ending March 3 was reported today by the state department of employment. The department said 433,913 persons filed claims during the week an increase of 12 per cent over the 387,696 the previous week, and nearly double the 272,685 for the comparative week a year ago. In the Orange office, 5856 claims were filed during the week, and 3808 paid, the department reporter. For the state as a whole, 283,225 persons drew insurance during the week, compared to 152,030 for the comparative week a year ago. There were 41,955 new claims filed an increase of more than 10,000 over a year ago. DAVID MICHAEL TSCHANN David Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. William S.
