"HANK" SAYS It seems to me that many young men of this county, and the country at large, who, because of circumstances, cannot or do not desire to enlist into an active military unit, are passing up a real bet when they don't investigate the benefits offered by the National Guard. You learn in your spare time valuable skills that will help you get ahead in your civilian job and receive expert training that prepares you for leadership. You will learn skills such as: motor maintenance, radio, radar, public speaking, food handling, supply procedure, personnel, management and a host of others. During World War I, National Guard units of the various states contributed a third of a million men to the Army in formal units. Two but of every five divisions that went to France were National Guard units and by far the greater number of them saw battle service. All of the 18 National Guard divisions saw combat action in World War II—nine in Europe and nine in the southwest Pacific. The American division, formed from units and personnel of other National Guard divisions, fought at Guadalcanal, Fiji, Bougainville, and in the Philippines. According to available records, National Guard units and troops were awarded 88 Presidential Unit Citations, 14 Individual Medal of Honor, 50 Distinguished Service Crosses, 48 Distinguished Flying The Enlisted Reserve Corps certainly deserves your attention. It stands on its own merits and provides the veteran a fine chance to keep up with his buddies. Did you ever pass up a good thing, simply because you knew nothing at all about it? Well, men, that's exactly what a lot of you have been doing. Your Army Enlisted Reserve Corps offers you many concerted benefits for which you are eligible—and you get paid for the time you put in with your local organization. What is the Enlisted Reserve Corps? A lot of veterans pass up the chance to get in on the ground floor of this peacetime "citizen-soldier" outfit, because they didn't know or take time to listen to the program when it was explained to them before their discharge. If you are qualified you may select one of many branches, including Armored-Cavalry, Infantry, Finance, Field Artillery, Medical Department and a dozen others. Feel perfectly free to come into my recruiting station at 128 South Los Angeles street, Anaheim, to discuss the possibility of you swinging into this great program. Over 50 former service men of Orange county have joined the Reserves in the past three weeks. There is a place for you, and one of which you will be justly proud. Don't hesitate, investigate all phases of this Enlisted Corps today. The local National Guard units of the famous 40th Division still needs men—with or without prior service. Vacancies exist up to Master Sergeants. Check with me on this—it's a "good deal." Army day will be celebrated through Orange county on April 9th. This year the program will center around Reserve activities with a big open house celebration. Enues and expenditures are concerned, with the belief that government should furnish the people with only necessary services going headway among the leguers. THE DEPARTMENTS: All allocations board approved another large group of impoverished school district expenditures; public women indicated snow levels may remain normal as to water content; the pack as a result of the wet end storms. Junior Gardener Will Compete for $6,000 in Awards A new production program in California junior vegetable gardeners, with $6,000 in awards, has been announced by E. Milton Andersen, department of horticulture, Utah State Agricultural College, western regional chairman of the National Junior Vegetable Growers association. In announcing the NJVGA ninth annual production-marketing contest, Andersen pointed out that all golden state boys are eligible to compete for A & B Food Stores' $6,000 in agricultural scholarships. He added that such a program should be of particular value and interest to youth gardeners of California where more than 138,000 farms in 1979 marketed crops valued at approximately $1,412,800,000. Increasingly Important The NJVGA regional chairmen also pointed out that such activities among the young farmers in the state are becoming increasingly important in view of the ever growing population resulting demands for more and better food. He cited recent estimates indicating the nation has 148,000,000 All of the 18 National Guard divisions saw combat action in World War II—nine in Europe and nine in the southwest Pacific. The American division, formed from units and personnel of other National Guard divisions, fought at Guadalcanal, Fiji, Bougainville, and in the Philippines. According to available records, National Guard units and troops were awarded 88 Presidential Unit Citations, 14 Individual Medal of Honor, 50 Distinguished Service Crosses, 48 Distinguished Flying Crosses and over 500 Silver Star Medals. Here's the chance for you high school men to earn some of that vacation money that comes in so handy. For one night a week at your local Armory you will receive a day's pay of whatever rank you hold. The starting pay is figured at $1.25 an hour. Then too, there's a summer camp for two weeks every year and if you don't think they have any fun at these camps ask any guardsman who has been to one. You not only have a good time but you collect 15 days full pay. Yes, here's a chance to help your country and at the same time help yourself. Early Americans did not fail to recognize their obligation to serve their country in time of emergency, although in peacetime they did not maintain a large standing army, feeling it was unnecessary. Today, as then, we rely on a "citizen army" in time of war. Future plans forsee no change in this historic policy. Today we have our Organized Reserve and the National Guard. The Enlisted Reserve Corps affords a man the opportunity to garner additional time and credit toward future retirement. It presents a training program that gives a man the chance to be up-to-date on the latest equipment and maneuvers the army develops. You may choose one of eighteen branches of service in the Enlisted Reserve, naturally selecting the one for which you are best qualified. This list includes Adjutant General's department, Army Security agency, Corps of Engineers, Finance department, Infantry, Military Intelligence and Women's Army Corps. You may enlist in the grade held at the time of separation from the Armed forces, if you have been on active service since September 16, 1940. If you are already a member of the reserve, you must reenlist within thirty days after discharge to fill your own vacancy, or with- California Last Week (Western News Service) THE GOVERNOR: The Warren-Howser feud occupied top spot in the news this week. Basically, the statements, counter-statements, involvement of various issues in the battle of words between the two constitutional officers boils to misery for the Republican party, as both Warren and Howser are top men in the GOP, and glee for the Democrats, who see in the ruckus a battling chance for a democratic governor in 1950 if the row keeps going long enough to split the Republicans. Warren sticks closely to his contention that law enforcement against organized rackets is lax as far as the attorney general's office is concerned, and Howser contends he doesn't have the funds to carry out the recommendations of the governor's commission on organized crime against bookmakers. There the matter stands, and who wins the battle probably won't be known until the elections a year hence. THE LEGISLATURE: Started the second half of the 1949 session and as usual, is slow getting underway. However, work on the Governor's Billion Dollar plus budget is well ahead of past years, an indication the solons want to wind up their business as rapidly as possible. You may enlist in the grade held at the time of separation from the Armed forces, if you have been on active service since September 16, 1940. If you are already a member of the reserve, you must reenlist within thirty days after discharge to fill your own vacancy, or within ninety days to reenlist in the grade held at time of discharge from the reserve. This restriction does not apply to reservists discharged after September 1, 1948, who reenlist before June 30, 1949. Drill pay is authorized for attendance at training assemblies. When on active duty, you get the same pay and allowances as the regulars. After twenty years of satisfactory service in the regular and reserve forces, you may begin to draw retirement benefits. Further details of the retirement program can be secured by dropping in to see me at the local U. S. Army and U. S. Air Force Recruiting Office, 128 South Los Angeles street, or better still call me at Anaheim 3686 and we'll arrange a get-together when it is convenient for you. There are increased opportunities for promotions and for commissions, for active and inactive duty training. In the future, as in the past, the reserve components of the army will be expected to play a major role in maintaining the military preparadness of the United States. "Push button warfare" has not developed to the point where a large army can be dispensed with; even the technical specialization upon which so much of the modern army depends is being increasingly provided from civilian ranks.
