Army Officers May Apply for Summer Training Army reserve officers who wish to participate in fifteen days summer field training this year with the California National Guard may apply for such temporary active duty through reserve channels prior to May 15, Major General Curtis D. O'Sullivan, Adjutant General, has announced. Planned to be of mutual benefit to civilian components, the invitation will enable as many company grade officers of the Officers Reserve Corps, desiring temporary duty, and a limited number of field grade officers to participate in summer training exercises. While some 1,800 officers and warrant officers have been commissioned in the California National Guard, the need is still great for tested junior leaders in the greatly expanded state forces, General O'Sullivan said. This year's training will be conducted at Camp San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, where the 40th and 49th Infantry divisions and 112th and 114th Anti-Aircraft Artillery brigades and other non-divisional units will engage in summer maneuvers for the second time since the post-war reorganization of the National Guard. Activities at the 10,000 acre state and federal guard reservation will include a well-balanced athletic and recreational program. Hunter Liggett Reservation will be used by the Artillery and Camp Cooke by the Anti-Aircraft Artillery units for firing practice. The 40th Infantry division and 112th AAA Bridge will train from July 10 to July 24; 49th Infantry division and 114th AAA Bridge from July 31 to August 14. Plans are being made to accommodate 16,000 California Guardsmen. Ernest Yorde, Rancher Since 1905, Passes Wed. Ernest Yorde, a rancher on Loara road since his arrival in Anaheim in 1905, passed away at his home Wednesday evening, March 9, following a prolonged illness. The solution to the question of interest to growers county where citrus crops produced from 76,722 acres. Dr. James P. Martin, of the University of Californiaports that in one green experiment, sour and sweet seedlings made from 5 per cent more growth had never been used than in soils from old chards. No seedling planted in rus soil died but many old soils showed root death had to be replanted. Furious disclosed the failures wiled by organisms in old citrus large numbers of fungi atodes were found in decayed roots. Dr. Martin said that furious of the infested soil s growth of orange seedless reduced root rotting, but were still better in soil, even if untreated. Main BURT MANSUR U-DRIVE Test Growth of Citrus Trees in Old and New Soil Why citrus trees do not do as well when planted in old groves as those planted in soil where no citrus trees have been grown before may be solved by the college of agriculture station at Riverside, where experiments are being conducted. The solution to the question is of interest to growers in Orange county where citrus crops are produced from 76,722 acres. Dr. James P. Martin, chemist at the University of California, reports that in one greenhouse experiment, sour and sweet orange seedlings made from 50 to 175 per cent more growth in soils that had never been used for citrus, than in soils from old citrus orchards. No seedling planted in non-citrus soil died but many planted in old soils showed root decay and had to be replanted. Further tests disclosed the failures were caused by organisms in old citrus soils. Large numbers of fungi and nematodes were found in the old decayed roots. Dr. Martin said that fumigation of the infested soil stimulated growth of orange seedlings and reduced root rotting, but results were still better in non-citrus soil, even if untreated.
