Solons Point to First Exhibition Game with Hollywood Stars Sunday
Sacramento’s Solons, under the masterful direction of Del Baker, are pointing for their first exhibition game Sunday afternoon with the Hollywood Stars in La Palma park.
Daily workouts have been lengthened with infield drill and batting practice taking up most of the time. Impressive at the place has been young Bill Wilson, 20 year old Lortg Beach boy who’s been poling some long ones.
No starting line-up has been made although Joe Grace has been anchoring down first and Big Jim Taylor appears set at third base. Tabor is in trim shape after working out last winter and bringing his weight down to 190.
Skipper Baker has had nineteen year old Dick Myers at second and been giving him a lot of drill. Myers, weighing only 150 has really looked smooth in workouts and fields either to the right or left with ease.
Still unheard from are pitcher Ed Smith, infielder and former Philadelphia Phillie, Howie Schultz and outfielder Joe Marty. Marty was the heavy-hitter of last year’s Solon team and wound up the season with a comfortable .318 average. Schultz is reported to be playing professional basketball.
The Hollywood Stars whose destinies this year will be guided by Fred Haney has had the Stars
High School Swimmers at Compton Today
Varsity swimming prospects at Anaheim high school have improved this year with Coach Ralph Kingsbury having four lettermen back and five swimmers from last year’s championship “B” squad on the roster.
This afternoon the Colonist tankmen are in Compton swimming a pre-season, dual meet and will journey to Beverly Hills next Wednesday, March 9, for some more of the same.
Dick Hoffman, Dudly Frank, Don Meyers and Orlyn North are the varsity lettermen back and the “B” champs include: Leonard Weaver, Jack Johannes, Babe Bauer, Ray Sharp and Ted Cleve-
Colonists Play Excelsior Nine; Needs Hurlers
Coach John Wallin will take the wraps off his ’49 Colonist baseball team tomorrow afternoon, Friday, March 4, for a practice tilt with Excelsior High of Norwalk at the local field.
This year’s team has Pat Patin league-leading slugger and Jo Bruce, Bob Hilton and Angela Mata from last season’s squad play an adequate supply of infielders outfielders, catchers, managers and batboys—but no pitchers!
Try Conversion
Outfielders Duane Carter and Bob Hilton and infielder Ronni Lemcki are all trying to convert to moundsmen. Bob Casperson freshman player has also indicated that he’d like to take a crack at the hurling assignment.
Rounding out the squad are in fielders Minard Duncan, Kee Reese and Lloyd Trapp; outfielders Cornel Gray, and Floyd Trapp with Steve Holden and Angela Mata ready for behind the plate duty. Dick Davenport is manager.
The Colonists will play ten practice games before meeting Santa Ana on April 22 for the season’s opener. They are also entered in the Pomona tournament sponsored by the 20-30 Club bringing together a host of high school teams from the southland and Arizona. In 1946 Anaheim won the consolation trophy. It is played the week of April 11.
Practice games scheduled in clude: March 4, Excelsior here; March 8, Corona there; March 15, Excelsior here; March 18, Jordor
Trackmen In Brea Relays
Anaheim high's track team sees action for the first time this year on Friday, March 4, at the annual Brea Relays where Coach 'Sad' Sam Keith has entered his charges in three of the scheduled nine events.
The events are run off in three different classes—according to the size of the school. Anaheim will be competing with the medium-sized class.
Colonists are entered in the shuttle relay, the two mile relay and the one mile relay. The shuttle relay is a four man event with each man running 120 yards over five flights of low hurdles. Newport holds the record for this event—setting a 56.9 mark in last year's meet, Dick Carson, Larry Weaver, Bob Mark and Norm Harvey are entered.
In the four man, two mile relay it will be Dick Golden, Johnny Hurtado, Bob Mark and Bill Larson wearing the Gold and Blue. They'll be shooting at a 9:4.2 mark set by Fullerton last year. Anaheim placed second in this event.
The mile event will have Curtis Meade, Ralph Yung, Dick Carson and Bob Mark running. Colton set a 3:39.7 mark in 48 with the locals running third.
Although not in line for a team trophy, the Anaheim trackmen will be competing for medals which are awarded to the first four in each event. A late start in training has hampered the locals and prevented their entering all events.
This afternoon the Colonist tankmen are in Compton swimming a pre-season, dual meet and will journey to Beverly Hills next Wednesday, March 9, for some more of the same.
Dick Hoffman, Dudly Frank, Don Meyers and Orlyn North are the varsity lettermen back and the "B" champs include: Leonard Weaver, Jack Johannes, Babe Bauer, Ray Sharp and Ted Cleveland.
This year's activity at the West Center street plunge is highlighted by the Sunset League prelims and finals on May 3 and 5 with Anaheim the host.
The local swimmers are entered in the C. I. F. Invitational at El Segundo, March 16 and 18 and have a dual meet slated for the 23rd with Redlands. They open the league at Huntington Beach March 30 and swim the following week at Downey.
Kingsbury doesn't bring his boys into the home pool for an official appearance until April 21 when they meet Fullerton. They wind up the season against Santa Ana Saints on April 28.

Steelhead and Salmon Fishing Season Ends
One of the poorest steelhead and salmon fishing seasons on record was announced by the State Division of Fish and Game.
The season which ended Monday day, February 28, was marred in some instances by too much water and in others, by too little stream water. On coastal streams south of San Francisco, the general complaint by sportsmen was too little water. In the north, heavy rains melting snow, and severe weather cut down the number of good fish ing days.
