Fishing Seasons Shifted; Bag Limits Changed
Reduction in bag limits and a shift of seasonal opening and closing dates for California sport-fishing will become effective March 1, the state division of fish and game has announced.
According to a division spokesman, the 1949 regulations are an attempt to alleviate pressures which will be placed on California waterways through their use by more than a million anglers. The regulations were formulated at a recent meeting of the state fish and game commission.
Conservation Measures
Reduction in the daily bag limit of black bass from 10 to 5 fish, trout season opening for 11 central Sierra counties set at March 30 instead of the general March 1 start for the rest of the state;
Cut in the daily abalone bag limit from 10 to 5;
Establishment of a two-month closed season starting March 1 for black bass and sunfish angling in northern California.
Reduction in bag limits of ocean game fish from 15 to 10 per day;
Inauguration of a bag limit of 50 scallops and 15 rockfish.
All previous regulations and stream closures will remain in force except those modified in 1949 regulations;
New Trout Season
With the exception of Lake Tahoe, Donner lake, Boca reservoir.
Colonist Baseball Team Opens '49 Season March 8
Coach Wallin's Colonist baseball team will open practice February 21 to prepare for a tough schedule which includes ten practice games plus the regular Sunset League contests.
In almost all the contests Coach Glover's jayvee squads will play at the same place and at the same time. The locals will have a few returning lettermen back from last year's squads, and a lot of good prospects from last seasons jayvee nine are expected to fill in the remaining vacancies.
Practice games are: Jordan varsity and jayvee there, March 8; varsity at Corona, March 10; Excelsior varsity and jayvee here, March 15; Jordan varsity and jayvee here, March 18; varsity at Bell Gardens, varsity here, jayvee there, April 1; Pomona tourney, April 11; Valencia varsity there, jayvee here, April 19; Valencia varsity here, jayvee there, April 26.
The West branch, south and middle forks of Feather river were abolished as steelhead and salmon fishing areas from December 1, 1949 to February 28, 1950.
The commission removed the minimum size limit of 25 inches on salmon taken by sportfishermen in ocean waters.
Closures of salmon spawning areas have been set between October 15 and December 31, instead of September 1 to February 28, to coincide more exactly with salmon spawning periods.

New Trout Season
With the exception of Lake Tahoe, Donner lake, Boca reservoir, lake Almanor, Butt lake, Pit river and its Lassen county tributaries, California's new summer trout season extends from May 30 to October 31 in the following counties; Maroposa, Tuolumne, Alpine, Calaveras, El Dorado, Amador, Placer, Nevada, Sierra, Plumas, and Lassen.
General trout season in the remainder of the state begins May 1, ending October 31.
To permit the taking of salmon and steelhead trout during spring and early fall months without setting up special salmon regulations, the bag limit of 15 fish or 10 pounds and one fish was modified to permit taking of at least three fish, regardless of weight.
Limit Freshwater Angling
The commission adopted a rule banning freshwater angling between March 1 and April 30 in all counties north of Mono, Madera, Fresno, Kings, and San Luis Obispo. Angling for shad, striped bass, and catfish is excepted.
Clear lake and the southern portion of the state will retain the all-year spiny-ray fishing season.
Night fishing will be permitted for catfish in Siskiyou, Shasta, and Modoc counties after March 1.
The West branch, south and middle forks of Feather river were abolished as steelhead and salmon fishing areas from December 1, 1949 to February 28, 1950.
The commission removed the minimum size limit of 25 inches on salmon taken by sportfishermen in ocean waters.
Closures of salmon spawning areas have been set between October 15 and December 31, instead of September 1 to February 26, to coincide more exactly with salmon spawning periods.
Bag Limits Set
Combination total bag limits of ten fish were set for the following ocean varieties: bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, skipjack, yellowtail, marlin, broadbill swordfish, black seas bass, albacore, baracuda, white sea bass, bonito, rock bass, kelp bass, California halibut, California corbina, yellowfin croaker, spotfin croaker, ling cod, and cabezone. The commission specified that no more than two of the daily bag limit may be marlin, broadbill swordfish, or black sea bass.

Gonzales Plays MacNamara in LA Met-Net Saturday
Apparently back in the form that enabled him to win the national men's singles championship, hard-hitting Richard "Dick" Gonzales will face Myron McNamara, the giant-killer from North Hollywood, in a Los Angeles Metropolitan Tennis Championship semi-final match Saturday, February 12, on the Griffith Playground courts, Riverside Drive at Los Feliz Boulevard.
The veteran McNamara won his way into the Met-Net semi-finals by successively defeating seventh-seeded Tom Falkenburg, Beverly Hills, and national public parks men's singles king Willis Anderson, who was seeded third.
Defending Met-Net champion Seymour Greenberg, seeded second, will face Dr. Julius Heldman of Long Beach Saturday in the other Met-Net singles semi-final. Heldman is seeded fourth.
Beverly Baker in First
With Beverly Baker, ambidextrous Santa Monica star who is seeded first, already safely in the finals, interest in Met-Net women's singles is centered on the Saturday semi-final contest between second-seeded Gracyn Wheeler Kelleher, Santa Monica, and Laura Lou Jahn, 15-year-old newcomer from New Jersey. The diminutive Miss Jahn upset fourth-seeded Patricia Henry Yeomans to gain the semifinal round.
Met-Net men's doubles semi-final matches on Saturday's schedule pit Willis Anderson and Straight Clark, former USC mainstay, against Seymour Greenberg and Tom Falkenberg and the top-seeded duo of Tom Chambers and John Moreno against Myron McNamara and Nolan McQuown.
City Rifle Range Nears Completion
Work on the rifle range north of the Olive and La Palma intersection in the industrial area to which the city excavated last year following an appropriation of $2,000, got well underway as a group of enthusiastic Izaak Walton and other rifle experts, put in bases for target forms and leveled the firing line Sunday.
The firing line is being bolstered with heavy logs, according to Bob Williams, local sporting goods store owner.
Any rifle shooters interested in speeding the project which will give Anaheim a large modern range for target practice within two months, are invited to bring rakes and join the work party next Sunday. Those wishing more information may contact Williams at 151 West Broadway; phone 4806.
'No Hunter' Signs Would be Fewer if 'Thanks' Given
There would be fewer "No Hunting" signs if more California hunters took the trouble to thank the landowners who have allowed hunting on their property, says a state fish and game official.
Joseph S. Hunter, chief of the bureau of game conservation, reports hundreds of letters of appreciation received in his office.
Anaheim Track Team Entered In Three Relays
Three major relay meets will headline Anaheim’s 1949 track schedule plus a single round of dual meets in the Sunset League.
The Brea relays will be staged on Tuesday, March 4 and two weeks later on Saturday, March 19, the Southern counties meet is scheduled at Huntington Beach. Friday, April 1, the locals will enter the El Monte relays to conclude three tough meets.
All Sunset League battles will be staged at Fullerton this year with the trials slated for Tuesday, April 26, and the finals on Friday, April 29.
Wednesday, March 8 — Dual meet: Anaheim at Santa Ana. Friday, March 11—Dual meet: Dow-
and by owners of two Butte county ranches where pheasant hunting was allowed last season under permit.
Approximately 15,000 acres of grain and rice lands owned by Terry Sartain and John McManus were opened to hunters as part of a continuing division of fish and game project to determine habits and survival of state-raised pheasants. Sartain reported the hundreds of hunters who used his land “conducted themselves like gentlemen, and will certainly be welcome next year.”
Jahn, 15-year-old newcomer from New Jersey. The diminutive Miss Jahn upset fourth-seeded Patricia Henry Yeomans to gain the semi-final round.
