Study Change In California Fire Fighting Studies that may change California's forest fire prevention and fighting system are being undertaken by the State Department of Forestry, it was learned this week. The studies are aimed at possible overhaul of the plan now in operation throughout the state which was developed in 1940. Changed conditions, especially population increases, have led fire prevention experts to believe the present plan is outmoded. During 1948, the state had 213 fire fighting crews. Each crew was composed of 4 to 13 men and each had an assigned responsibility area. The statistical analysis of the department's activities since 1940 may prove that the number of crews should be increased or they should be moved to new locations, forestry experts said. Of special importance it was pointed out, is the state's changing system of roads and traffic systems. Where crews were formerly spotted in isolated areas, good highways exist today which give easy access to those territories. Forestry officials feel that crews could control new hazards while maintaining vigilance over the area in which they were formerly stationed. William Fairbanks, state fire prevention officer, emphasized that a vital part of the study would deal with protection of watershed lands. He stated construction of irrigation projects and flood control checks should be large enough to allow for flood waters that could develop if watershed areas were completely burned off. At present, Fairbanks said, the state is attempting to develop new growth in burned out watershed areas. The latest project has been the seeding of 20,000 acres of mustard grass in Orange county which suffered extensive recent fire damage. According to Fairbanks, the mustard furnishes a fast growing cover crop until normal growths of brush and trees can take over the job of holding the soil in place. 10,328,821 Gallons Wine Consumed Consumption of California wine in the United States during October totaled 10,328,821 gallons, a new high for the year, it was announced today by the wine advisory board. October consumption raised the total for the year to 86,800,564 gallons, 31 per cent above the 66,364,483 gallons consumed in the first ten months of 1947. Lincoln Phone 5102 California Has Three Times More Cars Than Russia California possesses three times as many passenger automobiles, buses, trucks and motorcycles than are to be found in all soviet Russia, according to A. H. Henderson, director of the state department of motor vehicles. In a review of California's record automobile registration which at the last check showed 4,004,298 motor vehicles of all types registered by the department, 92,320 of which are in Orange county, Henderson said a further increase is assured when final figures for the year are compiled. Information received by the department shows Soviet Russia has only 1,200,000 motor vehicles of all types, and of this total only 180,000 are passenger automobiles. Compared to Soviet figures, the United States boasts 33,530,430 motor vehicles, of which 27,728,889 are passenger automobiles. The great superiority of the United States in the automobile industrial field is also shown in trucks. These are 5,698,194 trucks traveling United States highways and 103,247 buses, as opposed to 1,200,000 trucks and buses in use in Russia. Great Britain has 2,448,065 motor vehicles of all descriptions, France 1,300,000, and there are 6,603,409 in all Europe. Africa has 608,850 motor vehicles, Asia 422,088, Oceania including Australia and New Zealand and, 1,248,584; and in all Americas, North and South, restrictions total 36,320,140.
