Olive Anaheim ANK" DAYS expansion of the Armed Forces has confronted the U. S. and U. S. Air Force with necessity of providing a sufficient number of officers to lead thousands of men now enter services. There are many openings for officers in both services, early in the grades of lieutenant and captain. The Army estimates that it will need 30,000 additional officers by June 30, 1949. Air Force is asking for 10,000 new officers in the same period. Officers who already hold reserve commissions in the Army also may apply for return to active duty. Medical and Dental Corps officers may elect tours of one, two or three years' duration. Women are offered similar opportunities to become regular and reserve officers, and to attend an Army Officer Candidate School for Women. Professionally trained women are needed as officers to serve in the Army Nurse Corps and the Women's Medical Specialist Corps. Air Force Opportunities: A one-year program of thorough aviation training to provide pilots for the Air Force. Qualifications; 20 to 26½ years of age; single or married; ability to meet high physical and moral standards; two years of college education or ability to pass equivalent examination. Graduates receive a pilot rating, a commission as second lieutenant in the Air Force Reserve, and active duty for three years. Honor graduates receive regular commissions immediately. All graduates, during their tour of active duty, have the opportunity to qualify for one of the hundreds of regular commissions that are tendered each year. Ten thousand technical professionals commissions while serving on active duty. A certain number of Regular Army enlisted men and warrant officers are appointed directly from the ranks. In addition, a number of selected men from the ranks of the Regular Army and the National Guard are given appointments each year to the U. S. Military Academy. Former World War II Army officers, who do not hold reserve commissions, may apply for extended active duty tours provided they concurrently submit an application for a reserve commission. Applicants for extended active duty are considered from second lieutenants and captains who are under 47 years of age. State Officials Study Effects of Proposition 4 Proposition number four will cost the California taxpayer an additional $86,675,000 for the 1949-50 fiscal year, State Director of Finance, James Dean has told Governor Earl Warren. Dean, speaking at the regular meeting of the governor’s council, informed Warren that the more than $86 million fund will be above the $79,016,000 present annual cost of pension to aged and disabled citizens. Dean also pointed out that his estimate is a conservative, middle of the road total, and that the cost of the proposition could run higher. According to Dean, the calculations have been made on the theory that the federal government will underwrite 50 per cent of the pensions. If the plan is not acceptable to the federal government, Dean said the costs of pensions will exceed double the proposed estimates. Slate Telephone Hour Broadcasts Highly contrasted guest star programs were announced for the December Telephone Hour broadcasts, to be heard, beginning next Monday evening and each succeeding Monday night at 10 o’clock over NBC stations, R. J. Rossberg, manager of the Anaheim branch of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company, stated. Concert artists scheduled for the month’s four programs are Fritz Kreisler, Lily Pons, John Charles Thomas and Robert Casadesus. As well as accompanying the artists, the 57-piece Bell Telephone orchestra, directed by Donald Voorhees, will play special arrangements of familiar classical and semi-classical selections. Next Monday, Kreisler, distin of college education or ability to pass equivalent examination. Ten thousand technical, professional, and administrative Air Reserve and Air National Guard officers are being recalled to active duty on a voluntary basis between now and July 1, 1949. Vacancies exist for officers under 45 and in all grades up to and including lieutenant colonel. Second lieutenants who are college graduates have unusual opportunities to obtain regular commissions while on active duty. Men who are 20½ to 26½ years of age with two years of college education or its equivalent may receive commissions as second lieutenants in the Air Force Reserve upon completing a six-months' course in the Officer Candidate School. The training is open to civilians and Air Force enlisted men. Civilians without previous military training are required to take a 13-week basic course in military training before entering Officer Candidate School. Outstanding graduates receive regular commissions in the Air Force and other graduates have the opportunity of applying for a regular commission during three years of active duty. Qualified professional and technical specialists may receive commissions in the Air Force Reserve in grades, from second lieutenant to colonel, commensurate with their experience and qualifications. Applicants without previous military training will be assigned to a special Officer Training School before going to active duty.
