3,294 Veterans Attending State Colleges, Schools
There are 3,294 World War II veterans receiving state educational assistance during the fall term at approximately 200 institutions throughout California, according to Lawrence C. Stevens, State Director of Veterans Affairs.
This figure is larger by 555 than the number enrolled last fall in the state's California Veterans Educational Institute. The Institute pays tuition fees and other school expenses; plus a subsistence allowance of $40 a month, up to a maximum of $1,000 outlay for any one student.
Junior colleges account for the largest number of students in any class of institution, with 1,116 state-aided veterans enrolled. State universities account for 814 more, with 430 in state colleges, 541 in private universities and 326 in professional and graduate schools. The remainder are in high schools and vocational schools.
The largest junior college enrollment is at Los Angeles City College, with 169 veteran students under the state program. Among the state universities, University of California at Berkeley heads the list with 436. San Diego State College, with 130, and the University of Southern California, with 177, lead in their respective classifications.
Nearly half of the professional-school enrollees are studying medicine or dentistry.
State educational aid supplements the Federal GI Bill program, but the two are not used concurrently. Veterans eligible for the state benefits must have entered service from California and served at least 90 days prior to January 1, 1947.

G.I.'s Changing Schools Should Notify VA Office
Veterans studying under the GI Bill who want to transfer to another school at the end of the fall semester should notify the Veterans Administration as soon as possible, according to L. C. Chapman, manager of the Los Angeles VA Regional Office.
To enroll at a new school, Chapman explained, the student needs a supplemental certificate of eligibility. He also needs a statement from his present school showing that his progress there is satisfactory.
A student-veteran may obtain a supplemental certificate of eligibility by applying to the VA regional office which has his file.
