Plan Biggest March of Dimes In History
“This year’s record polio epidemic and the soaring costs of care and treatment of patients indicate the need of putting on the greatest March of Dimes drive in history,” declares L. Dee Belveal, state representative for the National Foundation for paralysis.
The drive this year will begin January 14 and last the rest of that month.
Belveal pointed out that the annual appeal is the sole source of funds through which the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis can carry on the fight against polio.
“As of November 13, 4834 persons have been stricken with polio and have received March of Dimes aid.
“To aid this work California has received $403,683.42 from the March of Dimes national epidemic aid fund,” Belveal declared.
Statistics released by the State Department of Health show that as of November 13, Los Angeles county was hardest hit by the epidemic with 2,708 cases, but fourth in per capita incidence of the disease. Merced was first by per capita rating with one case for each 928 persons, followed by Santa Barbara and Imperial counties. Los Angeles has one case for every 1405 persons.
