State Crew to Examine Health Of County Rats A state crew will begin early next month a check on the number of rats in northern Orange county and make a careful examination of their state of health. The state men are particularly interested in learning if northern Orange county rats are afflicted with typhus. Typhus is regarded by health authorities as endemic in parts of this and neighboring counties and a number of cases of the disease have developed among humans in the past 18 months. The state rodent-control crew will start in this vicinity and it will take them most of this month to make a check of the county, as it is the plan that they shall make a check of every premises in the county. Arrangements were made last week by H. B. Hollander and O. L. Meyer with E. E. Frisby of the county health department in charge of rodent control. The four-man crew will work under Meyer. They will bring with them a laboratory on wheels and will also use county laboratory facilities. There will be a preliminary inspection to locate rats, and this will be followed by a trapping program. The animals must be trapped alive since blood from live animals is required to determine if they are carriers of the disease or other rat-borne or flea-borne ailments. Blood samples are to be sent to a state laboratory at Berkeley for a final determination of the presence or absence of typhus. Records obtained will become a part of state and county health conditions. Officials emphasized that this is not to be a rat-extermination campaign as that is not a function of the health department, unless the rodents are found to be a menace to public health.
