The military mission of the Corps of Engineers is to facilitate the movement of our troops and to under the movement of the enemy. Within this simply stated mission operates one of the most important and complicated branches of our Army.
Engineering always has played some part in warfare. As man's inventions have been applied to military uses, this part has steadily become more important, with the result that today it is impossible to imagine an army function without its engineers.
The Corps of Engineers also has such continuing peacetime jobs as maintaining and improving our navigable rivers and harbors, protecting various communities from floods, and increasing the use of water power. These civil responsibilities, added to those which are purely of a military nature, make the Corps of Engineers unique among the branches of the Army.
The accomplishments of this branch of service during World War II are too numerous to set down here, but a few of their better known deeds are the atomic bomb project, the Alcan Highway, the Ledo Road, the rebuilding of Cherbourg and LaHavre Harbors when these were indispensable to the advance of our troops.
Engineer units were among the first to make assault landings on Normandy, June 6, 1944. Their job was to destroy or break paths through the many beach obstacles the enemy had built to repel such landings.
Men of the Corps of Engineers can be justly proud of the long history of this oldest professional service in the Army. Today the Corps does not intend to rest on its record of accomplishments, great as these have been. The part played in developing the atomic bomb, its outstanding achievements in combat and supporting operations, and its great civil
