Almost 125 Cars of Oranges Go Into New British Order for Concentrate
A firm order for 300,000 gallons of concentrated orange juice for Great Britain was received this week by the California Fruit Growers Exchange, Paul S. Armstrong, general manager of the marketing cooperative, told the board of directors.
The order, equal to almost 1500 cars or 25,000 tons of fresh fruit, was received from the British Food Ministry. The price is equivalent to the prevailing price of $30 per ton for juice fruit, f.o.b. packing house.
When mixed with water to orange juice consistency, the 300,000 gallons of concentrate will equal over two million gallons of single strength orange juice—enough for about 50 million glasses of California's best known beverage.
The concentrate will be made from this summer's Valencia oranges and the order will be completely filled before the close of the Valencia season.
The British Ministry of Food has been making concentrated orange juice available to the English people ever since the early days of World War II, because of its great health value. It is supplied under ration and at low cost for children under five and expectant mothers to afford the vitamin C commonly lacking in the English diet. The product has met with great popularity and is in great demand by English people, according to all reports.

Many Homes, Few Farms Bought by Vets of State
A total of 343 California veterans took advantage during July of the state's low-interest plan to purchase farms and homes, a slight increase over the June figure, the State Department of Veterans Affairs has announced.
The state advanced $2,267,596 to 338 veterans for the purchase of homes, an average of $6,709; and $47,100 on the total cost of five farms, an average of $9,420. In addition, $34,370 was advanced to 84 veterans for repairs and remodelling.
The current interest rate paid by eligible veterans buying homes or farms under the state plan is 3 per cent.
A total of 29,086 veterans of World Wars I and II have participated in the plan since it went into operation in 1922, representing an aggregate state outlay of more than $146,000,000, over half of which has been repaid.

The State Board of Equalization today denied the application for an on sale beer license to Clifford C. Snyder, operator of the Orange County Barn Dance in Placentia.
Snyder desired the beer license in connection with his Saturday night dances held in the Placentia American Legion hall. The Board denied the license on grounds that the Legion hall is located in a residential area and in the immediate vicinity of the Placentia Nazarene church.
An on sale beer license had previously been issued to the American Legion for the same premises.

The Farm Bureau also objected to the budget of the county planning commission. "The budget," remarked the Farm Bureau, "exhibits the traits of a department that will not recognize any limitations of its activities unless the public shall define limitations."
The Farm Bureau's tax committee also opposed the retention of the tax rate of $1 per $100 of assessed valuation in view of the fact that assessed valuations have been increased 24 per cent.
Supervisors were also asked to reduce the large unappropriated reserve, which the Farm Bureau report placed at $20,280. The farm group suggested that this be reduced to $100,000 and that the remainder be used to cut the tax rate by 8½ cents or that it be placed in an accumulative building fund.

Possibility was evidenced in announcement from H. C. Jr., secretary of the State Consol Board.
Board said the Board, will for the surveys and ap- made on a site near Chino location of a state prison since the Tehachapi Women's Association in Kern county.
The present prison for felons has more than 300 inmates. It was originally designed to accommodate a maximum of 100 Vincent said major con- projects would be re- there if the institution was continued at that location.
Never, he pointed out, the legislature authorized the sale of the prison to a new land on the grounds the present is so isolated it was im- for the state to maintain staff of prison employees.
