ACP PROVIDES FOR MATERIALS AND SERVICES
To meet the urgent need for soil and water conservation, the Agricultural Conservation program provides for three kinds of assistance to farmers, says Roy L. Hale, chairman of the Orange County Agricultural Conservation Committee.
According to the chairman the program provides:
(1) About 50 percent of the "out-of-pocket" cost of the practices in the form of payments made after the approved practices have been carried out. The payment is limited by the amount of money allocated to the county for conservation work under the ACProgram.
(2) Assistance in obtaining material such as borax for Klamath Weed Control.
(3) Assistance through purchase orders also is provided to obtain the services of contractors for dirt-moving practices for such conservation practices as building dams, terraces or land-leveling. Here again the purchase order covers the assistance provided under the program with the farmer paying the balance of the cost.
In the main all assistance under the program whether in the form of payments, materials or services averages about 50 percent of the cost. This assistance tilts the scales in favor of getting farmers to carry out soil-conservation practices on these farms, where good soil would otherwise go down the begin marketing them. Auctioneer to dispose of camps under Law No. 298 continued until March 30, 1949. This law provides first purchase rights go to semi-public and non-farmers' associations with understanding that the camp be continued in operation and labor housing. If no accords offers are received from groups indicating no further for continued operation and sale, sale is authorized by highest bidder with no restrictions.
Groups interested in buying labor camps may obtain bids and additional information William A. Anglim, chief officers Labor Camp Disposal Production and Marketing ministration, USDA, Berkshire California.
Government operation of labor camps was curtailed September and discontinued January 30 of this year camps formerly were owned under the USDA farm lab gram to house migatory weeds needed in the harvest of agricultural production.

Begin marketing them. Authority to dispose of camps under Public Law No. 298 continued until June 1949. This law provides that most purchase rights go to public and semi-public and non-profit farmers' associations with the understanding that the camps will be continued in operation as farm poor housing. "Animal fat production," says the Department of Agriculture's bureau of Agricultural Economics, during the rest of this year is likely to be below that of a year ago." This report, coupled with the U. S. Department of Commerce announcement that "supplies of fats and oils are far below prewar," means that kitchen fat salvage must continue to help make up shortages of fats and oils, the American Fat Salvage committee points out.

Bureau of Agricultural Economics,
during the rest of this year is likely to be below that of a year ago." This report, coupled with the U.S. Department of Commerce announcement that "supplies of fats and oils are far below prewar," means that kitchen fat salvage must continue to help make up shortages of fats and oils, the American Fat Salvage committee points out.
Shortages of virtually every kind of fats and oils are the most acute in world history. Used cooking fats salvaged from America's kitchens and reprocessed for industrial use, means greater quantities of fats — food fats included — can then be made available to American industries and to help need a starving world.
The Department of Agriculture points out that fat salvage is not only a vital conservation measure, but "helps put actual cash in the pocket of every salvager, for meat dealers buy every pound saved. Present needs," says the Department of Agriculture, "assure homemakers that there's a spot for every drop saved."

How to make a telephone grow
1. If your telephone grow in size as the system serving it grows, it might look like this someday. Since 1940 alone, telephones have increased 75% on the Coast. And the growth continues. Today your telephone is a bigger, more valuable servant than ever. Here's how it got that way.
2. Cables you'll probably never see had to be put in. New buildings, the telephones themselves, complex switching frames... an almost unbelievable amount of equipment had to be provided before the system could grow. We must spend millions of dollars to keep it expanding and improving...to meet the needs of the growing West.
3. Who pays for new equipment? Half a million dollars a day needed to expand and improve comes from investors who put their savings into the telephone business. To continue growing and improving, we must sell our services at fair and adequate prices that provide profits for investors that are fair and adequate.
4. When you make a local telephone call the cost averages less than a nickle. For those few penhies you hire a mighty servant...a bigger servant than ever before. There will soon be twice as many telephones on the Coast as there were ten years ago. They continue to go in rapidly. And each one added makes your telephone that much more valuable.
