Not only in the most progressive democracies, but even in backward countries, women have become voters and have now an active part in almost every phase of public life. But when one looks over the vast field of history an amazing thing is the discovery of the way in which, even in times and places in which the position of women was inferior to that of men, women have occupied positions of great power and dominance. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes in characters and actions strangely blended of both good and evil. Women have been powerful as queens and warriors, as sirens luring men to destruction, and as ambitious wives and mothers. One thinks of queens, like Cleopatra, Catherine of Russia, and Elizabeth of England; of warriors, ambitious women, like the mother of George III, whose admonition to her son, "George, be king," had like Boadicea and Joan of Arc; of something to do with the revolt of the American colonies. Now, in the Bible, all these phases of women in outstanding character and action are fully represented. There is the great judge-warrior, Deborah (Judges 5); the good and pure Hannah, mother of Samuel (Samuel 1); the beautiful Bathsheba, mother of ANAHEIM FOURSQUARE 1817 West Broadway Rev. O. L. All these, and many more, are there in the pages of the Old Testament. But a whole book of the Old Testament, the Book of Ruth, is devoted to the story of two women,Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi.Their character shines with undiminished beauty,as types of noble womanhood,as true for our time as for that ancient day.in which they lived, suffered and triumphed. CHRISTIAN SCIENCE "As the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself." This verse from John will be the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Life" in all branches of The Mother Church. The First Church of Christ,Scientist.in Boston.A Bible citation from Matthew's Gospel reports that in his Sermon on the Mount Jesus advised men not to lay up "treasures upon the where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal; But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.... For where your treasure is,the will your heart be also.... Ye cannot serve God and mammon.Inherence I say unto you.Take no thought for your life what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your bodywhat ye shall put on... But seek ye first the kingdom of God,and his righteousness;and all these things shall be added unto you." On this subject Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "We apprehend Life in divine Science only as we live above corporal sense and correct it.Our proportionate admission of the claims of good or of evil determines the harmony of our existence,-our health our longevity, and our Christianity." Dr. McDonald to Speak at Sunday Union Service NAMED OFFICER IN OPERA ASSOCIATION Miss Shirley Kohlenberger, professionally known as Lorraine Sales, formerly of Fullerton, was named executive secretary of the A. J. McFadden Fights “Bill of Rights” Petition A. J. McFadden, Santa Ana fruit grower and president of the state board of agriculture, has filed a suit with the state supreme court seeking to remove the so-called “California Bill of Rights” from the November ballot. In his suit he claims the bill would cost the state and taxpayers $187,000 just for putting the initiative on the ballot and would cut the value of state bonds. He further alleges that signatures to the initiative, in order to qualify with the proper number of names, was obtained by fraud. It would license gambling, provide fees to the state for such licenses, plus a percentage of wages and eliminate all other taxes except a two per cent levy on gross receipts and fees to be paid by “practitioners of the healing arts.” It would also outlaw primary election cross-filing, authorize no only $100 to $130 pensions to a past 60, but increase present job less, sickness and disability benefits and provide burial benefits. The proposal was initiated by former promoters of the collapse prewar “Ham and Eggs” movement. Mr. McFadden was notified that his suit will be considered promptly.
