Washday in Tel Aviv Barbed wire surrounding an Israeli military car park in Tel Aviv serves as an improvised laundry line for these two Jewish women who were driven from their home by fighting on the border between Tel Aviv and Jaffa. They are now living in temporary quarters set up for refugees in Tel Aviv. Farm Economist Gives Views On Boom-Bust Cycle What can a farmer do to prepare for a depression? And what can the public do to make booms and depressions less severe? In Circular 376, "Booms, Depressions, and the Farmer," just issued, the University of California College of Agriculture tries to find answers to such questions as these. In this pamphlet, based on a more detailed economic paper, Dr. S. V. Wantrup points out that major ups and downs of farm income, in California and in other states, are closely tied to ups and downs of non-farm income, especially those of industrial payrolls. Probing deeper into the forces that are at work, he searches out the basic cause of such changes. After summarizing the present situation and the developments that are likely to occur in the near future, the circular suggests specific measures that the public can safely take to lessen inflation and to keep depressions from going to disastrous levels. It suggests also what the individual farmer can do during good times to put himself in position to weather bad times when they come. Dr. Wantrup recently received a Guggenheim Award for his contributions in the field of agricultural economics. A free copy of Circular 376 can be obtained from the Farm Advisor's office at 1104 W. 8th Street, Santa Ana. Poor Growth of Bush Berries Due to Drought Many bush berry plantings in Orange County did not leaf out this spring as they should have. This trouble is probably due to inadequate soil moisture during the winter months, A. H. Holland, assistant farm advisor, believes. Although deciduous plants such as bush berries, peaches, and apricots have no leaves during the winter, they will suffer from lack of moisture in the soil. In the case of bush berries, this apparently is what happened extensively during the past winter. Old Timers Prepare for Annual Picnic The date for the annual Old Timers Picnic and some of the details of the program have been announced by Earl Abbey, perpetual president of the committee. This year's affair will be held at Irvine park Sunday, June 27. Chairman Abbey says 5000 old timers are expected to attend this big event of the year for Orange county pioneers. The committees advises those expecting to attend to bring their own lunches and sugar—for the coffee which the committee will provide.
