Being the early morning following a two day holiday and election morning, it seems the men weren't too interested in business, so the breakfast turned out to be more or less of a social gathering. One bit of business was passed on though, and that was to buy bats and balls for a teenage baseball team. Monday has been reserved for this group as their day for the ball diamond. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bayliss and two children of Lomita and Mr. and Mrs. C. Truckon of San Francisco were week-end guests of their parents Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Siples of Cypress. Mr. and Mrs. Glen A. Hubbard were in charge of the ticket office at the Shrine Auditorium during the Police Show recently. The Hubbards own an orange grove on Miller Road. Mr. Hubbard was connected with the Los Angeles Police Department in the finger printing division for eight years prior to locating in Cypress. Lee Stradley of Lee's Cafe, who underwent a mastoid operation at St. Joseph's hospital on Monday, returned home on Monday of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Essex were guests over the week end of Mrs. Essex's cousin, Pearl Rath of Long Beach and of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Brogdon of Santa Paula. Centralia school will hold their annual picnic on Friday of this week at Irvine Park. A pot-luck dinner will be taken and the P-T.A. voted to furnish potato the entire project. The money made will be used to finish paying for the land and to erect a club or community house and to properly equip the park, as was the money which was cleared on last years celebration. Earl Sartwell of Cypress will have an exhibit of gems at the world's largest Mineral and Gem show at the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium on July 16, 17 and 18. In addition to the exhibit there will be movies, speakers and demonstrations. Mr. Sartwell will have his own gem cutting machine on exhibition in addition to his collection of gems and minerals. Mr. and Mrs. Evan Pugh had as dinner guests on Wednesday evening, in celebration of Mr. Pugh's birthday, Mr. and Mrs. Bennie Pugh, and daughter, Jolinda, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Pugh and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Pugh and son, Ronnie, of San Luis Obispo. Urges Wider Use of DDT Sprinkling 10 per cent DDT powder in places where it will be covered and out of sight is a good, safe way of stopping many household insect pests before they get a start, states A. H. Holland. This is a preventive defense. Both the housewife and the handy man who does repairs can well keep a supply of DDT powder on hand to use whenever the chance arises, say entomologists of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Typical examples of times and places for DDT dusting are: In replacing linoleum for kitchen floors; dust lightly in cracks in the floor and an area six inches or more wide near the baseboard. Centralia school will hold their annual picnic on Friday of this week at Irvine Park. A pot-luck dinner will be taken and the P-T.A. voted to furnish potato chips, cold drinks and ice cream. The parents are asked to turn out in as great a number as possible and to send word to the school as to what they may be able to do in the way of transportation. The school bus will make two trips if necessary and can carry fifty pupils per load. Two more new businesses make their debut in Cypress. H. H. Ihnen has recently built a grocery and meat market on Lincoln. He and his son, "Bud," have been operating a wholesale egg business from this property for some little time. The new store will be managed by Charles Yomas of Long Beach. The other business has been in operation for some little time in Cypress, but has recently built a lovely new store with living quarters above. This is the famous "Rainway Sprinkler." In addition to this product which has been manufactured for over fifteen years the store will handle a complete line of poultry and gardening equipment. D. A. Norland is the owner. At the regular Chamber of Commerce meeting on Monday night, the evening was turned over to the discussion of "White Gold Days." Last year was the first celebration and it was so successful that it has been made an annual affair. This year it will probably be held a month earlier, due to the rain scare that was experienced last year in October. Richard Hathcock has been made chairman of the housewife, and the handy man who does repairs can well keep a supply of DDT powder on hand to use whenever the chance arises, say entomologists of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Typical examples of times and places for DDT dusting are: In replacing linoleum for kitchen floors; dust lightly in cracks in the floor and an area six inches or more wide near the baseboard. When carpets are up for cleaning, dust with DDT before relaying them. See that there is DDT under the shields and around pipes where plumbing goes through the floor or wall. These suggestions are merely illustrative, Holland says. Used in this way, DDT is effective for a long time. Sheltered from sunlight, DDT is likely to last long. Covered, and out of sight and touch, it is not a hazard to pets and children. Cracks and crevices are favored homes and hiding places for invading insects—ants, roaches, clothes moths, carpet beetles, spiders, fleas, silverfish, bedbugs and other pests. If there is DDT present when the insect arrives, the chances are excellent that the pest will not live to multiply its kind. This kind of preventive defense costs little, either in money or in time and effort. Gives Tips On Washing Gloves Be sure leather gloves are labelled "washable" before trying to wash them at home, clothing specialists of the U.S. Department of Agriculture caution. Many gloves of suede, doeskin, capeskin and pigskin are finished so that they can be washed and are labelled accordingly on the kinds of leather, however, must inside.
