CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"What agreement hath the text of God with idols? for ye are not temple of the living God." This citation from II Corinthians will be Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson on "Soul and Body" in branches of The Mother Church, First Church of Christ, Scientist Boston.
Paul writes in his first letter to Corinthians, "While one saith I of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos watered; but God gave me increase ... Now he that planeth and he that watereth are one; every man shall receive his own ward according to his own labour For we are labourers together with God; ye are God's husbandry, ye God's building ... Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwelleth in you."
Mary Baker Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Sciences:" "To divest thought of trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being appear—this is the great attainment by means of which we shall swallow the false and give place to true. Thus we may establish in the temple, or body, 'whose build and maker is God.'"

SUNDAY LESSON
FOR MAY 20
Prayer Is Greatest Source for Keeping One’s Hold on God
“I HAVE lost my hold on God,” said a woman recently, speaking out of a deep sense of frustration and sadness.
She was the victim of an incurable disease, not fatal, but subject to control and very strict regimen. In addition she was denied the outlet and means of relief that mean much to many sufferers. Her eyes were bad, and she could not read to any extent. She was shut out from the worlds of romance, adventure, and beauty through which most ill persons find relaxation and escape.
Everything combined to induce a condition of physical and nervous breakdown, in which her religion and faith in God, that should have been her stay and support, had become blacked out. And the consciousness of this seemed to be troubling her more than her physical disabilities. For she had lost the power and will to conquer with the loss of her sense of God.
Manifestly, her case called for something more than the skill of medical doctors.
One must meet such a situation as if it were his own, not minimizing in any way its depth of tragedy or attempting to make light of what is really dark and serious.
What, then, can one say and do? It is certain that if help is to come, it must be from those who have been in a similar situation but have not lost their faith. Help must come from those who, even under the deepest sufferings and trials, have given the richest and truest witness concerning the reality of God.
Who are these, and how did they conquer?
Confirmation Class of 1948; Birthday Service
In connection with the seventy-fifth anniversary of St. Michael's Episcopal church, a special confirmation class was presided over by the Right Reverend Robert Burton Gooden, D.D., retired Bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles.
Members of the confirmation class were Patricia Loly, Martha Greenwood, Mrs. Thomas Harrison, Jr., Charles Chambers, Dr. and Mrs. George W. Koch, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Dahlman, Clay Bruington and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Goodrich.
Using for his sermon text “O How Amiable Are Thy Dwellings, Thy Lord of Hosts,” Dr. Gooden brought a message of vital interest to the new members and the audience. A forceful speaker, the sermon was greatly enjoyed.
Special soloist for the anniversary event was Cordon H. Purdy of this city. The communion music sung at the service was written by Dean Arnold G. H. Bode, former rector of St. Michael’s church and was written while he was active in the church here. Another of Mr. Bode’s compositions was sung during the service, “I Walk the King’s High Way.”
A reception immediately following the morning service was held on the lawn of the rectory. The Susan Lafaucherie Guild was in charge of the arrangements with Mrs. Clay Bruington, Mrs. Willard Olding and Mrs. Thomas Fisher, the chairmen.

This is perhaps the most widespread and the most painful and crippling disease known throughout the world today.
It has been rightly called "The Great Crippler."
