Growers Told How to Care For Avocado Grafts Many grafted avocado trees Orange county have been neglected, says Dick Puffer, assistant farm advisor, who also states that the care of the tree after grafting is as important as the operation itself. After the scions have been sorted they should be sealed in so as possible by filling voids with grafting compound. Exposed outer surfaces on the stems and scion should be heavily coated with a grafting compound. Treated surfaces should then be covered with paper and the stem covered with a heavy perforated paper bag. The trunk should be wrapped, shaded or whitewashed to prevent sunburn. From time until growth begins, an occasional inspection and possibly some rewaxing are all that need be done. When growth begins cracks will appear in the wax and allow decay organisms to envelop the wood. Then the grafts may be watched carefully and rewax when necessary. If water sprouts appear below the grafts, they should be removed or cut back severely until grafts are larger; then remove. If more than one scion grows on a branch, only one should be retained permanently. The branch to be saved should be pruned lightly or if possible not pruned at all. The other branches will be removed later should be pruned heavily. The pruned branches help heal over the stub and are removed when this purpose has been accomplished. If only one scion grows square shoulder on the opposite side. FOR SALE ESTATE HEATROLA Circulating heater. Heats five rooms. Reasonable. Good Condition See or Write R. F. H. McCollister's Military Affairs committee is informed. An imposing array of high ranking regular army and national guard officers testified before the committee which is seeking to evolve a plan to aid the national guard in its postwar reorganization. It was the consesus of all that until armory space is provided the national guard cannot reach its former efficiency and that such armory space must be provided by the state; there being no federal money available for that purpose. Testifying, Col. Leonard Boyd, regular army inspector in this area; General Otto B. Sandman, Lt. Col. Wayland Miller, and Lt. Col. Vincent M. Hildago of the California national guard, disclosed that in many cases U.S. army equipment is denied units because of lack of storage space; while other vital equipment used in communications and guns are unavailable. Chief shortage is in uniforms; lack of which is destroying morale; the witnesses said. General Sandman urged that the state contribute from $2.50 to $5 per day to members of the national guard attending camp to compensate for loss of pay while away from jobs. It was also urged that the state contribute funds towards the purchase of athletic equipment and for social activities. It was also called to the committee's attention that armories now being used were constructed for 60-man units while those of modern organizations consist of from 160 to 236 men.
