January Bond Sales Break All Records Did you buy a bond during January? If you did, you are one of those who contributed to a record-shattering total of $4,773,-047 in U.S. Savings bonds purchased by southern Californians during January. In Orange county alone some $660,016.50 Series "E" bonds were sold, and a total of $1,172,641 in government savings bonds of all kinds were sold. These figures are significant in that, for the one month, they represent approximately 15 per cent of last year's total, and all previous sales in any one month, except during the war bond drives, were exceeded. The January total exceeded the December sales by over ten million dollars, according to Treasury officials. VIEWED DURING THE HOUSING SHORTAGE Sedately centered on a vast and beautifully groomed lawn before a palatial residence in this vicinity was one junior-sized pup tent plus two contented occupants! Amazed pedestrians stopped to stare. "Don't laugh," the dwellers grinned, "it could happen to you, too." There are 45,000 retail butcher shops in the United States. The single light that shone first in his Menlo Park laboratory has become a beacon that lights the world. The power that flowed from that first successful central electric generating station he built in New York has swelled into a force that lightens the burdens of all mankind. The passage of time only adds to the stature of the man and the magnificence of his achievements. It is fitting that we should pay tribute to Edison on the centennial of his birth... but only the future can give us the true perspective of his greatness.
