G. Bonelli, fourth district member of the State Board of Equalization who made the revelation with the announcement that, upon the basis of distribution of 233,423,963 gallons of motor vehicle fuel, the tax collections for October had been 7,002,719. The October Diesel fuel taxes, computed at the same three cents per gallon rate and collected mainly from bus and truck operators, amounting to $197,300, exceeded collections for the same month of 1945 by 21.26 per cent. He predicted that November use fuel, or diesel, taxes would top $200,000 for the first time and that the field for the year would be more than $2,000,000. Bonelli pointed out that $10,877,520 had been collected from this source since the tax was first levied in 1937. The first nickel bearing coin to be issued by the United States was the small cent containing 88% copper and 12% nickel. Its issuance was authorized by an Act of Congress, February 21, 1857. Payroll Savings Aids Workers to Buy Extra Bonds The Government found it simpler and less expensive to collect the Income Tax on salaries and wages from the paymaster before the salaries or wages were given to the employee or worker: that saves trouble not only to the Government but to the tax payer as well. When the employer by law keeps back what belongs to the Government and gives the employee what is properly the employee's share in the long run, income tax payment is much less of a burden. The same philosophy underlies the saving of money and the buying of bonds on the payroll savings plan. If the money which the employee decides positively that he will save regularly, each week or month, never comes into his hands until it comes in the shape of a Savings Bond, the employee never has to debate with himself and to withstand the temptation of deciding whether to buy a Bond or to buy something else which for the moment awakens a desire for its possession. That saves much trouble, much time, some expense—and helps the employee buy many more Bonds. That is why the Treasury's Payroll Savings Plan brought more money into the great War Finance program than any other plan. If one is earning $100 a month and decides to save $10 a month, it is much more regularly and painlessly done if he has that $10 put into his savings without first coming into his pockets. In that case, he can make the rest of his Christmas GREETINGS TO OUR FRIENDS Anaheim Pet Shop 261 East Center St. Anaheim Business Leaders Below Are Members by Appointments of Anaheim and are pledged to Possible in Service and Merchandise, Prosperity. Stassen has already tossed his hat into the ring. time, some expense—and helps the employee buy many more Bonds. That is why the Treasury's Payroll Savings Plan brought more money into the great War Finance program than any other plan. If one is earning $100 a month and decides to save $10 a month, it is much more regularly and painlessly done if he has that $10 put into his savings without first coming into his pockets. In that case, he can make the rest of his monthly budget fit that $90 income. If a person puts from $18.75 up into an E Bond, not only is that amount there for him to pick up surely and safely any time he needs it after 60 days (from the first day of the month in which the Bond was purchased), but it is there with its accumulated interest, as printed on the Bond itself, until the end of ten years when it will be worth $25. You can invest, month by month, up to $3,750 a year in E Bonds and have them coming due each month, beginning ten years after you buy the first one. If a widow puts $10,000 her deceased husband left her as life insurance, into Series G Savings Bonds, every six months the Government will send $125 to her address in her name, and at the end of a 12-year period, her $10,000 is still there for her to take out or to invest all over again in Bonds at 2½% interest. Some districts of Japan contain as many as 1,000 homes where hand-made paper-making processes are practiced following ancient methods which take one man a year to turn out as much paper as machinery does in 20 minutes. The total cost of the atomic project to America was about $2,-000,000,000; another industrial nation should be able to duplicate the result for $500,000,000 or less because they can avoid costly experimenting. FIXING UP the HOME By Diane Greeter Holiday Dinners THE turkey is but a part of the holiday dinner. On this festive occasion we usually have several side dishes and an elaborate OPEN SEASON The season for Presidential aspirants has opened. It's a bit early, being at least a year and a half in advance of the party conventions, but former Governor of Minnesota Harold E. Stassen has already tossed his hat into the ring. It's a good hat from a good man. But we're sorry to see it go into the ring so soon. Political history in recent years shows that the man who starts out well in advance to land the GOP nomination usually is left out at the nominating convention while a dark horse of a "draftee" gets it. In Mr. Stassen's case it may be different, but on the basis of past experience it might have been better for him and his political fortunes if he had withheld his announcement until a later time. His forthrightness in declaring his position, however, deserves commendation. Johann Gutenberg printed the first Bible at Mainz, Germany, between 1450-56. The Bible was in Latin, being printed from a contemporary manuscript of the Vulgate. There are between forty or fifty copies of this Bible in existence. One copy is owned by the Congressional Library, Washington, D.C. This is said to be one of three perfect copies and one of several printed on vellum. The cost of this Bible was nearly $400,000. The Bible was first written down in Hebrew and Greek, and England came to deeper knowledge of Christianity through a Latin translation of it. The alphabet is Roman, the numbers are Arabic, and the ideals are drawn primarily from Palestine. It can be brought to the table piping hot. This means that the gravy, mashed potatoes and several other things are being finished on the top burners of the stove at the same time. The clean, quick heat of a gas range is really appreciated when the cook has one eye on the clock. The visible flame is easy to control. Every top burner is busy. In the oven the huge bird is already done and is getting a little more luscious brown color. It has been cooked the proper time under regulated heat and is bound to be just right. All this, the convenience of a modern fuel that can also be used for automatic water heating, house heating and refrigeration, is available even if you live far out in the country or on the fringes of the suburbs. Modern liquefied petroleum gas — LP-Gas — more commonly known as "bottled" gas and "tank" gas, does the job for you when you live off the city gas mains. Wartime Army Officers Asked To Join Regulars According to the local U.S. Army recruiting officer stationed at Fullerton, wartime officers of the army who have returned to civilian life still have an opportunity to secure a commission in the regular army. All men who are interested in a regular army career are reminded that the closing date for applications for regular army commissions is midnight, December 31. Information about regular army commissions may be obtained at any army post or army recruiting office. Detailed information may also be gained by writing to the Adjutant General, War Department, Washington, D.C. There's a new aluminum pancake turner out that flips the flap-jacks by merely pushing the trigger. A Million-Ton peanut crop worth an estimated $175 million is expected for 1946. This will double pre-war production and up the total value 400 per cent. Vic Vet says GI INSURANCE PROVIDES A TOTAL DISABILITY INCOME. Rhodium, one of the platinum group metals, is often used for reflectors of large searchlights as the surface will retain a very high polish and does not tarnish in sea air. It is also not affected by the high temperature of the lamps. NEW PARENTS—GRANDPARENTS Proud new parents are Mr. and Mrs. James Dibble of 409 East La Palma, who welcomed a baby daughter, Jeanne Catherine, who arrived at Fullerton General hospital last Monday evening, tipping the scales at six pounds. Mrs. Dibble is he former Joan Webb of this city. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. William P. Webb of Anaheim, who are now grandparents for the first time. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dibble of Hudson Falls, New York, now visiting here over the Christmas holidays. Although Wollaston is best known for his discoveries in chemistry, he also made a special study of platinum. From the ore of this metal, in a crude state, he extracted two new elements in 1803 and named them palladium and rhodium. One of the newer trends in the jewelry field is matched sets of palladium mesh bracelets and earrings. Meshed jewelry is particularly appealing in the summer time or in warm climates because of its cool yet light feeling. Joyously the Yuletide bells peel their message of happiness to all mankind. Deep resonant chimes echo a prayer for health, and prosperity to the peoples of the earth. As each mellow tone rings forth over the country-side, in every heart there is the hope that Christmas, 1947, will bring a wealth of contentment and everlasting peace to all. ing peace to all.
