Original plans called for a 32-page publication, with eight pages in color, and an issue of 5,250. However, it was found that the public required more copies, and the order was increased to 15,-750. Increased demands this week necessitated placing an order for an additional 20,000 copies and, we hope, this will complete the January issue, making the total in excess of 35,000 copies. We wish to thank all those who have helped in making possible the publication of what, in our opinion, is a not to be sneered at first issue of the first softball publication in the West. While being far from what we hope to make the publication, when one considers that there were very few available records, we do not feel too much ashamed of our accomplishment, considering the stress and strain of more than 16 hours labor a day—seven days a week — under which this editor has carried on in order to make the publication possible. We wish to especially place emphasis on the necessity of all softball aggregations getting their news and schedules in on time. We will publish complete the Metropolitan schedules, the Buena Park Lynx itinerary, and as many more of the major leagues and teams as furnish us with clean, legible copy. We do not intend, cannot afford to, and see no necessity of going out after news matter of this class. The same will hold good for team standing and game writeups, excepting a few special games at which we will have a reporter and camera man present. The advertising rate was based on an issue of 5,250. There is still available some advertising space, and if you feel that getting your business or your town before over 35,000 readers of a strictly sports magazine, contact us at the Gazette office, 259 East Center street, Anaheim. Signing off for a successful softball season. Sincerely, E. S. HOLMES, (adv.) How to save by spending—Buy a U.S. Savings Bond at your bank. Collins Reported Lead Man for Assembly Speaker Veteran lawmaker in the state legislature and congress, Assemblyman Sam L. Collins of Fullerton was reported this week far in the lead for election as Assembly Speaker, when the legislature convenes on January 6. A member of the lower house for the past six years, Collins was chairman of the rules committee and Republican floor leader during the 1943 and 1945 regular sessions and the intervening special sessions. Collins, who was at one time District Attorney of Orange county, is representing the 75th District, and was re-elected at the primaries. He won nomination both by his own and the Democratic parties. According to indications, Collins will receive a heavy vote from Democratic legislators, in addition to strong support from Republican assemblymen. Collins is a veteran of World War I, serving at the Mexican border and with the American Expeditionary Forces in France. Upon his return, he became Assistant District Attorney, then District Attorney. He was sent to congress for two terms as the representative of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. He fought for legislation placing a Federal ban on gambling ship operations, during his tenure in congress. As early as 1935 he warned that the United States should concentrate on air power to meet threats of possible invasion. Sam Collins is a member of the American Legion, the Masons and Danceable rhythms. stress and strain of more than 16 hours labor a day—seven days a week — under which this editor has carried on in order to make the publication possible.
