Capacity Crowd Acclaims 'Quality Street' at AUHS
Stage lights dimmed as the last strains of the overture faded away, and before a capacity audience, James M. Barrie's famous "Quality Street", was presented under the sponsorship of Anaheim Union high school Parent-Teachers association tri-starring Miss Ruth Phelps, drama coach; Mrs. Mary Thompson, speech instructor, and Paul H. Demaree, principal, last night, Wednesday. Miss Phelps directed the benefit four-act comedy.
Facets and foibles of human nature blended with delicate humor in Barrie's delectable portrayal of the genteel population of Quality Street, England, during the Napoleonic wars.
Demaree played the part of Valentine Brown, dashing gentleman and soldier. Miss Phelps was the fluttering and winsome heroine, Miss Phoebe Thorossel. Mrs. Thompson interpreted the part of her older sister, Susan Thorossel.
Other members of the cast included Minnie R. Spicer and Kathleen McFaul as Fanny and Mary Willoughby; Miss Ruth Swanson as Charlotte Parrott; Chester Shirk as Ensign Blades; Neva Solt, Henrietta Turnbull; Velda Barnes, Patty the maid; Richard Ryan, the recruiting sergeant, and Clyde Nickle, lieutenant Spicer.
The "genteel school children" included Franklin Ferrin, Anna Lou Daly, Jackie Wilmore, Mary Jean Bushman, Sharon Lynn Ross, Jerry Glover, Gretchen Glover, Carol Ann Booth, Melinda Booth, Carol Lee Ryan, Barbara Anne Ryan, John Bushman, Alvin Heiden, Edward Rickel and Ronnie Keith.
