Candidate Musick Urges Citizens to Register and Vote
With the first county election in Orange in four years drawing near, James A. Musick, World War II candidate for sheriff, today joined his voice with civic organizations, public officials and influential citizens in the campaign to register and vote a maximum of the electorate on November 5.
It will cost the county upwards of $20,000 if the general election vote does not exceed that of the June primary, according to County Clerk B. J. Smith. In the primaries 51 per cent of the total registered roll of 76,000 cast votes.
Public officials predict that this registration figure may rise to 80,000 by Sept. 26, the final day to qualify for voting in November, but they also express the fear that
final result may show "large registration, small actual vote."
It costs approximately 50 cents per name to re-register voters and the law provides that unless voters appear at the polls on either the primary or general election day their name must be stricken from the rolls.
Musick, in the course of trips about the county, has cited the importance to the general welfare of local elections and argued against the pattern of voting only in major state or federal contested elections. He has pointed out that continuation of the American election system is dependent upon willingness of citizens to exercise the right of franchise at every opportunity.
More Groups Back Proposition No. 3
The California Council of Education announced the addition of 22 new groups to the already impressive list of organizations that have officially endorsed Proposition 3, which guarantees a $2400 yearly salary to California's school teachers.
Orange county's council of the State Chamber of Commerce is included in this group. Each one of the organizations stated, by resolution, that the guaranteed salary of $2400 was the only way California's school system could be protected from deterioration.
Gasoline Tax in July Breaks All Previous Records
The California gasoline tax for July reached an all-time high of $7,185,717, based upon distribution of $239,523,907 gallons of motor vehicle fuel, according to an announcement made today by William G. Bonelli, Fourth District member of the State Board of Equalization. This marked an increase of $2,266,238, or 46 per cent, over the tax for the corresponding month of 1945 when rationing was still in effect.
The tax yield is not only far more than that of a year ago, but for the first time has exceeded $7,000,000 for a single month, it was pointed out by Bonelli. The highest monthly total ever recorded previously was that for May, 1946, when the tax was $6,-793,253.
Bonelli attributed the unprecedented yield to seasonable factors. July motor vehicle fuel consumption ordinarily shows an advance over that for prior months of the same year due to greater highway use. He predicted that figures for ensuing months should not register an appreciable decline, as increasing population will probably bring more motor vehicles to California's highways.

It was also announced that diesel fuel taxes for July had amounted to $186,602, marking a gain of almost 22 per cent over the yield for the same month of last year. Collected principally from the operations of some 6,700 trucks and buses, the annual yield from this tax should be in excess of $2,000,000 and ought to bring the total gasoline and diesel fuel tax revenue for the year up to a figure of at least $80,000,000, according to Bonelli's predictions.
Between 1936 and 1914, approximately 30,000 miles of United States highways were surfaced annually.
