Les Brown to Be At Rendezvous Ballroom Friday
Les Brown and his orchestra, hailed by music fans from coast to coast as "The Band of the Year," will appear at the Rendezvous ballroom in Balboa tomorrow night, September 20, demonstrating the style of music which has won for them the hearty acclaim of the general public and the press.
Recently voted one of the ten top bands in Radio Dally's countrywide poll of radio editors, Les Brown and his orchestra have skyrocketed to a top position among the "name" bands, due to their Columbia recordings and loads of air time on all the major networks throughout the country. They made many highly successful appearances at the Hotel Sherman and the Blackhawk cafe in Chicago, the Palladium in Los Angeles, the Hotel Astor Roof and the Cafe Rouge of the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City.
Brown's Columbia recordings have long been a "must" in the nation's top music shops and in the 400,000 automatic phonographs that dot the country, proving that his popularity is based upon the enthusiasm of the boys and girls who make the bands and who understand music.
Bringing with him an imposing roster of talented stars which include Pat Flaherty, who is always a favorite once heard; Butch Stone, comedy novelty singer; Jack Haskell, Dick Shanahan at the drums and many others, Brown's orchestra has made a hit in theatres too, with many fine engagements at the New York Paramount and the Strand, the Chicago Theatre, the Earle in Philadelphia, and the Palace in

Bringing with him an imposing roster of talented stars which include Pat Flaherty, who is always a favorite once heard; Butch Stone, comedy novelty singer; Jack Haskell, Dick Shanahan at the drums and many others, Brown's orchestra has made a hit in theatres too, with many fine engagements at the New York Paramount and the Strand, the Chicago Theatre, the Earle in Philadelphia, and the Palace in Cleveland.
Les Brown won first place in the annual popularity poll conducted among 700 high schools with an estimated attendance of nearly 100,000 bobby soxers. This was the biggest surprise the music world had in many a year. Les and his crew had set the music field a new high pace to follow with their innumerable best seller Columbia recordings, including Les' own "Sentimental Journey," along with "A Good Man is Hard to Find," "Robin Hood," "My Dreams are Getting Better All the Time," and "He's Home for a Little While." Other winners, along with Les Brown in the annual poll conducted by "The Billboard," were Bing Crosby, Dinah Shore and the Andrews Sisters.
Beat Deadline!
GI Bill Expires
On October 5
Recruiting officials once more urged young men to "beat the deadline" of October 5, by enlisting in the army and avoiding any chance of missing out on full educational advantages, home and business loans and other benefits given by the GI Bill of Rights.
"October 5 is a date to remember," said Recruiting Officer Lieutenant Edward F. Tully, "that's when the GI Bill expires!"
He pointed out that students who wish to earn a college course, but who do not have sufficient credits to enter, can obtain missing credits by taking a course in the army.
The lieutenant added that all men who served in the armed forces during the emergency, or who are now in the service, still retain the full rights earned by them under the bill; but all men who enlist after midnight of that date will be unable to reap the dividends of the bill.
