'Pox Campaign Ends; 30,000 In County Get Needle
With as many as 450 vaccinations made in one visit, Dr. Edward Lee Russell, county health officer reported last week, one out of every six persons in Orange county has been vaccinated as a preventive against small pox this year.
Yesterday marked the last day of scheduled visits to any county sector but vaccinations will be performed on request at the health department in the courthouse annex at Santa Ana.
Visits made last week included trips to Anaheim, Yorba Linda, Garden Grove, Irvine, El Toro and La Habra.
Dr. Russell said the health department has performed approximately 15,000 vaccinations while a similar number has been administered by private physicians. During a recent visit to Huntington Beach, he disclosed, 450 vaccinations were given.
The program was launched following an outbreak of smallpox earlier this year that failed to develop into an epidemic stage.
It was also undertaken as a preventive measure against Oriental smallpox which had developed among veterans returning from the Pacific war theaters.
Up to May 18, the number of smallpox cases reported in the county since January 1, totaled 1052, Dr. Russell said.
