Chispa Chapter, O.E.S., Celebrates 50th Anniversary Shining golden decorations artistically arranged and an impressive ceremony in striking gold and white marked the 50th anniversary celebration of Anaheim's Chispa chapter, Order of Eastern Star, held in the Masonic Temple Tuesday evening, May 28, with more than 350 persons attending from this area. Instituted on May 28, 1896, Chispa Chapter is one of the oldest organizations here. Mrs. Mary Ella Coons and Mrs. Jane Helmsen are the only living charter members. Mrs. Coons is the mother of Dr. Arthur Coons, president-elect of Occidental college. Due to illness she was unable to preside at the meeting. She was honored by a huge bouquet of flowers extended by the members. Mrs. Helmsen, senior worthy matron, received the 50 year membership pin given by the Grand chapter of the state of California, Order of Eastern Star. Presentation of the gold star which has emblems in colored enamel below the 50 year date, was made by Mrs. Eva Boyd, past grand treasurer and a past worthy matron of Chispa chapter. Mrs. Ethel Van Meter, worthy matron, presided over the business session and John Saenger, worthy patron, presided under the good of order. Special escort to the east was given to past matrons and past patrons of Chispa chapter with Mrs. Van Meter paying tribute to the altar they lighted the candles, one by one, repeating four-line verses, in procession, appropriate to the period represented. Then they formed a symbolic ladder with the crooks as golden rungs. Preluding this ceremony, Carolyn Fackiner sang a song with appropriate words written especially for the occasion. She also presented a solo with the lighting of each candle. Soft musical interludes were played by Esther Kemper. At this time Mrs. Helmsen, charter member, was escorted through the ladder formation with the ten officers raising points for her entrance. These officers included Camille Deane, Vera Riner, Pauline Marian, Rebecca Hasson, Susie Brown, Marian Fennell, Lillian Jones, Doris Baker, Gladys Woodward and Sue Maher. "Happy Birthday," sung by the entire audience resounded through the hall as the cake was taken into the banquet room by the bearers with the ten officers forming a procession. Gold china, napkins with the chapter name, date and occasion in gold letters, and seven-candle candelabra and huge gold leaf sprayed paper roses graced the large tea table. They were artistically created and arranged by Daisy Casey. Delicious refreshments of chicken salad, ripe olives, wafers, tea, coffee and salted nuts were enjoyed. A reverent tribute was paid to the late Della Marie Polston who passed away this April by the draping of the altar in her memory. Service men who made the supreme sacrifice for their country were also honored. Visitors attended this impressive affair not only from county chapters but also from chapters of the Order of Eastern Star in many states, including Oregon, Washington, Minnesota and Missouri. Delightful prelude was the presentation of a beautiful corsage of tiny everlasting flowers in pastel tones blended with gold lace doilies and gold ribbon to each lady as she was greeted at the door. Mrs. Van Meter read a letter from the worthy grand matron of the State of California, Order of Eastern Star, Isabella Harrison Hilditch, who sent her best wishes and congratulations to the Chipsa chapter on this occasion, regretting that official business in the northern part of the state prevented her from attending. Many other letters were read to the group from absent members who sent their congratulations. They were presented by Maude Adams, secretary. Artistic setting for the program was found in the huge shower basket in front of the presiding officer's pedestal, where gold leaf sprayed shades covered the side lights of the spacious room and bowls filled with golden pansies graced the secretary's desk and the piano. Ebell Novel Breakfast Is Huge Success Laughter rocked the rafters of the Ebell clubhouse as more than 120 members, appropriately attired in nightgowns, peddle pushers, pajamas, robes, shorts, bath towel costumes and partly assembled ensembles, enjoyed a hilarious "come as you are!" breakfast, May 29 at 10 o'clock. Announced as a surprise invitational affair, members were startled and caught unaware in the midst of gardening, showering, cleaning and dressing by early morning telephone calls from the breakfast committee saying, "come as you are!" Staging the gala breakfast were members of the ways and means committee headed by Mrs. Joe Van Wagoner, who was mistress of ceremonies. She resorted to a loud speaker to be heard above the appreciative party participants during the clever program. Assisting her were Mrs. H. J. Each candle represented five years in the chapter's history. Ten of the 1946 officers entered two at a time from each side of the hall. They were also wearing snowy formals and carried shepherd's crooks, covered with gold leaf spray blending with golden ribbon. Fackiner in charge of the grand march and Mrs., Homer Wallace presiding over the admissions and games. The guests' enjoyment of a delicious breakfast featuring 40 pounds of ham (!) and hash browned potatoes was not impaired despite the paper bags gracing their right hands. They had been "bagged" by the hostesses at the door and were requested to greet their friends with the other hand. Gay miniature maypoles and May baskets filled with bright spring flowers decorated the tables. Streamers and vari-colored baloons formed a festive canopy. Completing the effect, was a striking stage arrangement highlighted by a mannikin, loaned from the S.Q.R. store, clad in garden togs. It was surrounded by an array of garden tools; plants, flowers and a redwood table topped with a striped umbrella and comfortable chairs. A clothes line hung with a display of unmentionables of all shapes, and for all ages and sizes was the background of the outdoor scene. The grand march was led by Mrs. August E.
