Leonard J. Winney Passes On After Long Illness
Leonard James Winney, born in Wisconsin on April 17, 1861, one of fourteen children, passed away last Thursday, May 16th, at the age of 85 years and 29 days. Being a very active man during his life, his health became bad about a year and a half ago and since August he had been confined to the Anaheim Lutheran hospital.
Coming to the vicinity of Anaheim in 1900, he engaged in ranching until late years. He came from Redlands where he was employed with the Southern California Edison Company for several years. Mr. Winney had been a resident of California since 1893 and saw the progress of his adopted state through the early part of the century, being active in the settlement of the community in which he lived.
Left to mourn his passing are two sons, W. A. Winney of Stanton and A. L. Winney of Anaheim; five daughters, Mrs. Rena Wheeler, Mrs. Mae Suiter, Mrs. Alice Slough, all of Anaheim, Mrs. H. H. Eden of Bellflower, and Mrs. Marie Robinson of Fullerton; twenty grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. O. R. Owen of Anaheim and one brother, Grant Winney of Hutchinson, Kansas, the latter being confined in a veterans hospital where he is seriously ill.
Carrying out his wish, pall-bearers were his grandsons. For the service, Mrs. Walter Ross was soloist, singing "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross," favorite hymns of his wife, who preceded him in death twenty-seven years ago.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God welleth in you?" This question from I Corinthians will be the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Soul and Body" in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston.
The Lesson-Sermon includes these Bible selections from the Psalms: "O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is; To see thy power and thy glory; so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary . . . My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips." And from I Corinthians, "What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? . . . therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:" "Soul is the substance, Life, and intelligence of man, which is individualized, but not in matter. Soul can never reflect anything inferior to Spirit. Man is the expression of Soul."

Sheriff Elliott Opens Vigorous Safety Drive
Jesse L. Elliott
Acting on President Truman's request that safety on the roads and highways of the nation be impressed upon all citizens, Sheriff Jesse Elliott of Orange county, Patrol Chief E. Raymond Cato, Captain Henry C. Meehan of the California Highway Patrol and all chief of police in Orange county have embarked upon a vigorous campaign to stress this appeal of the Chief Executive of the United States.
More people are killed and maimed every year than in some of the greatest battles of history by careless and thoughtless drivers on our roads and highways throughout the United States. Sheriff Elliott said, "Orange county is no exception. Fatal accidents in Orange county have doubled this year according to Earl Abbey, coroner of the county.

Work was started on the new wing to the present restaurant last week they said and at a late hour yesterday both partners predicted it would be completed before morning today.
A neutral wall paper adorned with a simple tree design covers the walls from the ceiling to a level about six feet above the floor and is set off with a green-paneled border surrounding the entire dining room.
Entrance to the kitchen is made at the rear of the new wing and lavatory facilities flank the east wall. The new dining room before its renovation formerly served as a banquet room for the restaurant proper. Seating arrangements will provide for couples and there will be a majority of four and six seater tables.
Eustis and Cruzen have been managing the Parker House Cafe since February of this year.

Thomas H. Kuchel. Mr. Kuchel in truth is your state controller. He was appointed on my father's death. He is a trained public official. He is a man with whom my father worked and who had my father's complete confidence.
"I know that my late father, who had the confidence of California's voters, would back Thomas H. Kuchel to the limit as I am backing him and I know that my father would be the first to resent the attempt of any other candidate to trade on a family name."
An open letter signed by Mrs. Annie (J. H.) Ganey, member of the Democrat State Central Committee, and received here early this week, lent its weight to the vast number of supporters for Kuchel.
Her letter, addressed as follows:
AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL DEMOCRATS
I hereby endorse the candidacy of Thomas E. Kuchel (pronounced Kee-kl) for State Controller, and urge all democrats to work for, and vote for, THOMAS H. KUCHEL.
Mr. Kuchel was appointed State Controller upon the death of Harry B. Riley.
A man by the name of Harry E. Riley, (no relation to the deceased Harry B. Riley, former State Controller) of South Gate is a candidate for this office on the Democratic ticket. He was registered as a Republican until March 25, 1946, when he changed his registration to Democrat, and the next day filed as a Democratic candidate for State Controller. (I have in my possession photocopies of registration records in support of this statement.)
Fellow Democrats, do not be misled; vote to keep THOMAS H. KUCHEL State Controller.
Mrs. Annie (J. H.) Ganey
Member Democrat State Central Committee.
and has had nine years experience in the state legislature. I have known him since college days and have followed closely his professional career since then. I have always admired his seriousness of purpose and his ability. I can personally recommend him to the people of California as a square shooter who plays the game fair, and who is well qualified to handle our financial affairs."
Thomas H. Kuchel has been controller since the death of Harry "B." Riley on Feb. 4, 1946, being appointed to this responsible position by Governor Warren, who knew Kuchel for his sincerity and honesty in his past duties as state senator and who, he believed, was qualified to perform the important duties as state controller.
Among the five opponents running against Kuchel is a man with a name very similar to the late controller, this man being Harry E. Riley, a salesman in the electrical business, who states he is an engineer although he shows no occupation on the ballot. It has been reported he is distributing misleading literature which would lead the voter to believe he is the Harry "B." Riley who, until his death in February, was controller for almost eight years.
Obviously past experience as an electrical salesman or even an electrical engineer is no qualification for this important office. The state controller in addition to being responsible for the proper and legal expenditure of every dollar of state money, is a member of 17 state boards and commissions. Years of experience in state government are necessary to qualify a man for this post—and for almost 30 years the holders of this office have gone to it with experience in state government similar to that of Thomas H. Kuchel.
So far as is known, Candidate Harry "E." Riley is not violating any law by this campaign which is misleading to the voters. The ethics of the situation are another matter!
registered as a Republican until March 25, 1946, when he changed his registration to Democrat, and the next day filed as a Democratic candidate for State Controller. (I have in my possession photostatic copies of registration records in support of this statement.)
Fellow Democrats, do not be misled; vote to keep THOMAS H. KUCHEL State Controller.
Mrs. Annie (J. H.) Ganey
Member Democrat State Central Committee.
Jeff Cravath, another well-known Californian, football coach of USC Trojans, whose team was conference champion for 1945, has also come out for the full support of Controller Kuchel. He is a long time friend of Kuchel.
"Politics is not my game," stated Cravath, "but I want to get active in the political picture long enough to help retain my good friend, Tom Kuchel, as our State Controller. I am particularly alarmed at the report that state-wide polls show that one of Mr. Kuchel's opponents, a Mr. Harry E. Riley, is receiving support from voters who apparently believe him to be the former Controller, Harry B. Riley, recently deceased, as there is such a close similarity in their names.
"I believe that it is important that our voters know the true facts in electing a man to the state's most important fiscal office. This new Riley is in no way related to the former public servant, and has never had experience in the Controller's department. He is in the electrical business, I understand."
"On the other hand," continued Cravath, "Mr. Kuchel is experienced as our present Controller,
