Death Sun. Takes Freeman
Freeman, 87 years of age, away on Sunday, May 19, Orange county hospital. Alabama, he had been a tenant of California since 1914.
Other revenue increases reported were as follows: inheritance taxes, $4,010,911; bank and corporation franchise taxes and corporation income taxes, $3,833,-614; insurance companies taxes, $2,047,956; liquor taxes and licenses, $1,781,097; and miscellaneous revenues, $7,470,740.
Kuchel reported General Fund expenditures for the first 10 months of the present fiscal year amounted to $279,200,373. These were partially offset, he pointed out, by county relief loan payments totaling $2,340,494 which brought expenditures down to an increase of $16,024,689 over the same period last year.
The increased expenditures occurred in the apportionments to counties for elementary schools which previous figure was upped $11,406,639 and the University of California, which increased $2,-907,980 over the same period last year.
Increase in the elementary school apportionments, Kuchel said, was due primarily to 1945 legislation which increased the rates used in determining apportionments.

Cost for such treatment during the time the claim is being considered, he said, is borne entirely by the Veterans' Administration.
Doctors Llewellyn Wilson and Lloyd Burrows, commenting upon Mellon's address, advised post members it was only necessary to supply doctors with the service-men's serial number in order to obtain medical treatment while Sheffield described educational benefits available to all World War II vets under the present GI bill of rights and also stressed the availability of the state's own educational benefit which allows pre-war resident servicemen a lump sum of $1,000, issued at the rate of $40 a month for the furtherance of education.
He said this state educational subsidy is available at any time during the veterans life but cannot be collected while receiving educational benefits under the federal bill.
Post members also learned the state loan limit was upped to $7,-500 this week for veterans desiring to build or purchase their own home and veterans of World War I who obtained government grants for building purposes learned they would soon be notified of a reduction in interest charges on loans as the government pushed interest rates down from 5 per cent to 3 per cent.
Edwin J. Dailey, former Navy veteran, once more back in his role of an insurance salesman, advised members on the advantages of the present GI insurance eight-year term policy.
He pointed out several disadvantages of the present insurance program, namely: refusal of the government to pay the face value of the policy in a lump sum upon the death of the insured but this fact was further amplified by Mellon who said the veterans' administration recently announced lump payments of such policies would soon be forthcoming.
Post members also learned that veterans have now been given second choice priority immediately after the federal government on the purchase of surplus war materials.
The meeting closed with a short open forum during which questions were answered by veterans.
