Sidelites of The Brownies Continued from Page 1 bases, and possibly four, but Gene stubbed his toe going into second, and fell. Oh, well, it happens to race horses, too! Li'l Johnnie Lucaddelo mooches more free ducats than can be found in a press box. John's consist of "hitched" rides to first, opposing pitchers seeming to have trouble finding the small area that lies between his knees and shoulders. He had three bases on balls Thursday, and scored as result of one of them in the sixth. His single in the eighth, which gave him a batting average of .333 for the day, was nullified when he was caught in a run-down between third base and home plate. Al LaMacchia looks like a cinch for a regular berth with the Browns. Another sterling performance like he turned in here last Saturday and he's odds-on to oust one regular from his position—that's "Railroad Al" Connors, who's had the announcer's job at La Palma park all his own way since training started. Oh, well, age will tell—and youth must be served. Les McGarity looked big-time in there behind the plate Saturday, while the Browns were losing to Pittsburgh, 4 to 1. It was the first time the local fans had seen him in action, and they learned there is a serious side to the big, good-natured "Mick." His receiving was without a bobble, and he had a stinging single to center in the first of his three official trips to the plate, receiving a walk on the last, in the eighth—then growling at Gerheauser for not "pitching to" him. Social Security Safeguard Urged The Social Security board offers cooperation to workers and former workers who have reached the age of 65, to help them avoid loss of benefits through delay in filing claims, the board's office at Long Beach states. Any person who has worked enough in private industry and commerce to be insured under the old-age and survivors' insurance program can file a claim at the age of 65 to peg his benefits to a point below which they cannot fall. Then, if he keeps on working, or if he gets a new job, and his wage record would produce higher benefits at a later date, he may file a request to have his benefit recalculated to give him the higher rate. Workers are urged to confer with Social Security officials upon reaching age 65, in order to protect full benefit rights. "A great many workers have done that," the board manager said. Truck Collide Car Wednesday A large truck loaded supplies, going east on was struck by a Cadillac going north on Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon o'clock. Driver of the truck, Martin of Los Angeles jured. His swamper, Smith, a negro, also Angeles, was taken to theheim Lutheran hospital ment of slight head fracture. It was the first time the local fans had seen him in action, and they learned there is a serious side, to the big, good-natured "Mick." His receiving was without a bobble, and he had a stinging single to center in the first of his three official trips to the plate, receiving a walk on the last, in the eighth—then growling at Gerheauser for not "pitching to" him. Gerheauser blanked the Browns in his four innings Saturday, setting them down in 1-2-3 order in the sixth and seventh innings, and issuing one pass each in the eighth and ninth. He struck out three. The two leading Browns hold-outs—Vern Stephens, shortstop, and Dick Siebert, first baseman—sat on the Brownie bench through Saturday's game. Siebert flew in from St. Paul the day before, and Stephens was over from Long Beach. The latter's father pinch-hit as umpire on the bases. George Bradley, the Browns' only .300 hitter last season, batted for Frank Biscan in the third, smashing a single to left. Two were out, and George died on first when Al White lifted a fly to the same territory. Masonry chimneys in frame houses should be free-standing, giving no support to the house and receiving none from it. Center ANAHEIM Truck Collides With Car Wednesday p.m. A large truck loaded with drug supplies, going east on Broadway, was struck by a Cadillac sedan going north on Los Angeles street, Wednesday afternoon at 3:15 o'clock. Driver of the truck, Thomas A. Martin of Los Angeles, was uninjured. His swamper, William A. Smith, a negro, also from Los Angeles, was taken to the Anaheim Lutheran hospital for treatment of slight head injuries. Frank Nardulli, driver of the car, which had a 1945 license plate, received more serious injuries and was taken to the Fullerton General hospital. His address is still unknown. The truck after traveling 24 feet from the point of impact on East Broadway, overturned. The Cadillac was towed to the Anaheim Auto Works and the Los Angeles office called for aid in removing the truck. There are about 4000 persons in the U. S. who are 100 years old or older than that.
