Alfred Valdez Due To Arrive Home WITH THE 32nd INFANTRY DIVISION IN NORTHERN KYUSHU, Japan:—A veteran of five operations with the 32nd or Red Arrow division, Private First Class Alfred Valdez, son of Mr. and Mrs. Manuela Valdez of 321 Juliana street, Anaheim, is returning home after 28 months in the Pacific theater of action. Valdez, a motorman with Company "B" of the 126th Infantry Regiment has seen action at Saidor and Aitape, New Guiena, Morotai in the Dutch East Indies, Leyte and Luzon in the Philippine Islands. At the war's end, Valdez was still in action with his unit in the rugged Caraballo mountains of Luzon. He left for the United States from the Japanese city of Kokura in northern Kyushu, the zone of occupation of the 126th Infantry. In an interview Valdez said, "It's been two years since I tasted any of Mom's cooking, now I can make up for it." A student before the war, Valdez entered the army in April, 1943, trained at Camp Cook, California, and was sent overseas the following November. Paul Boettcher On USS St. Louis In an interview Valdez said, "It's been two years since I tasted any of Mom's cooking, now I can make up for it." St. Louis—(Delayed)—Paul G. Boettcher, gunner's mate, second class, USN, 208 Sprague street, Anaheim, served on this light cruiser when she made a visit to Kiirun, Formosa. After picking her careful way through mine-strewn Formosan waters, "the heroine of Pearl Harbor" entered Kiirun harbor Oct. 17 to cover landings by elements of the Chinese 70th Army and thus became the first American ship ever tied up to a Kiirun dock. She was met by two barge-loads of Chinese civilians who bade her welcome with exploding strings of firecrackers and wierd string music. Equally intriguing, for the crew, was the St. Louis' preceding assignment, patrolling China's Yangtze river, with frequent liberty in Shanghai. The St. Louis, which has been added to the "Magic Carpet" fleet, spent the last 40 days of the war swinging back and forth in the East China Sea, watching over minesweepers operating in one of the world's largest minefields, and participating in anti-shipping sweeps along the China coast southeast of Shanghai. Previously she played a major role in the securing of Okinawa and was a segment of Task Force 58 in carrier-plane strikes against the Japanese homeland. A. G. Viramontes Is on Way Home Pearl Harbor, T. H.—Sgt. Arthur G. Viramontes, of Anaheim, is on his way home. Viramontes is one of 1,100 high-point army veterans whom the "Magic Carpet" is bringing back to the states aboard the U.S.S. Salvo Island. The U.S.S. Salvo Island—one of more than 250 carriers, battle-ships, cruisers, and attack transports in the navy's famed "Magic Carpet" fleet—left Pearl Harbor, Tuesday, November 27, and was scheduled to arrive in San Pedro Virgil Isbell to Arrive Home Soon PEARL HARBOR, T. H.—Virgil R. Isbell, SSMS3c, USNR, of 423 Malrose, Anaheim, is on his way home. Isbell is one of 3,488 high-point Navy veterans whom the "Magic Carpet" is bringing back to the states aboard the U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard. The U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard—one of more than 250 carriers, battleships, cruisers, and attack transports in the Navy's formed "Magic Carpet" fleet—left Salpan November 20, and was scheduled to arrive in San Francisco about December 3. Passengers will go directly to the separation centers nearest their homes to complete the formalities of obtaining their discharges before returning to civilian life. Wilson Suller, son of Earl and Josephine Fuller has arrived back in the states after an extended tour in Scotland, England, France and Germany; now stationed at camp Miles Standish, Mass., and expecting a Christmas furlough. ANAHEIM GAZETTE Anaheim, served on the U.S.S. Bennington, which arrived in San Francisco Nov. 7. As a member of Task Group 58, the "Busy B" participated in the first carrier strike against Japan. Despite damage inflicted by the terrific typhoon of June 4-5, 1945, the Bennington later returned to Japan and launched an attack against Kyushu airfields. Her planes also took part in strikes against Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Keramo Retto, and other Japanese home islands.
