SMITH, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE "God the Preserver of Man" will be the subject of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon in all branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Science, in Boston. The Golden Text is from Psalms: "The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore." A selection from The Acts records that "There sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep; and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. And Paul went down, and fell on him, and embracing him said, Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him . . . And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted." In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says, "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony." Needy Aged Less But Payments Are More in October A total of 3155 persons in Orange county received aid as needy aged during October, this year, as compared to the all-time peak of 3352 in January, 1942, the California Taxpayers' association reveals, in making public its analysis of postwar trends in such aid in California. Old age aid payments in this county last October totalled $146,-809, compared with $120,514 in January, 1942. Throughout the state, the number of people receiving old age reached 158,331 for October, 1945, only a few hundred below the 158,786 all-time high for the state, reached in March, 1942, and payments totalled $7,501,114, as against $5,787,115 in the March, 1942, peak month. "Major reason for the $7,501,114 total payment in California for 158,331 persons for October, 1945, compared with $5,787,115 for 158,786 in March, 1942, is the 25 per cent increase in maximum payment provided by 1943 legislation, which raised the maximum per month per person from $40 to $90," the association said. "During the war, many people 65 and older worked and were self-supporting. In the future, however, it is expected that many people who worked during the war will seek aid as needy aged persons. "Great care should be exercised in administration of aid to needy aged all over California, so that only those in need receive it and so that the tax bill to the people for it is kept as low as possible." In the thirty-five months I have been in Washington I have watched the administrations of three secretaries of state. This is an important job. In 1786, the secretary of state was placed in line next to the vice-president, to succeed to the presidency. Six secretaries of state have become presidents. The list of secretaries contains the names of some of the most able men in American history. It is still important. What has happened to it? In this thirty-five months, there have been vacillations and "reorganizations." where is the continuity and the firmness and sureness which should mark the foreign policy of the most influential nation in the world today? This influence is the desires of the people of the United States were followed and be exerted only on the cause of peace among nations, equality among peoples, and freedom" of which we talk so much. A few days ago I attended a meeting at the National Press Club, where General Hurley spoke; it was the day after he had handed his startling resignation to Secretary Lyndrus. On Monday, two days before, he had called on the secretary and had apparently been willing, on the basis of certain assurances made him, to return to China. What had happened? It is necessary to go back a little. Hurley was sent to China at a time of desperation. Was China about to collapse? Could the two factions, nationals and commun- NAZARENE Claudina and Cypress Sts. Funeral rites will be held Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary with the Rev. L. E. Elifert, pastor of Zion Lutheran church, officiating. The body will be removed to Rebville for burial. During the war, many people 65 and older worked and were self-supporting. GO NORTH Mr. and Mrs. Warren Jackson recently left for Pasco, Wash., where Mr. Jackson, discharged from the Navy in which he was serving as lieutenant commander, plans to go into business enterprise. They will be accompanied by his two brothers, James, affiliated with Lockheed for the past eight years, and Charles, recently discharged from the Army, serving as a sergeant, and now located at Spokane, Wash., employed in civilian capacity on the base in that area. Hurley was sent to China at a time of desperation. Was China about to collapse? Could the two factions, nationals and communists, be kept in harmony, sufficiently to fight the Japs? Could food and supplies be gotten to them? Would Russia make certain agreements relative to that phase of the war? Hurley did what would appear to the interested bystander to be an excellent job. China did not collapse; both factions fought the Japs instead of each other; Russia made (and kept) the desired agreements, and supplies got to China. Throughout all this, Hurley claimed that he was opposed by "career men" as he described them, of the department of state. Not big men, just the same little men with definite objectives, which this column has so often called the "slide rule-boys," who swarm around Washington like fernites, trying to undermine constitutional government. Hurley had them sent home from China. When he got back himself, he found these men had been placed in positions in the state department which gave them authority over him. He was particularly irked that the state department, which makes a fetish of secrecy, should refuse to allow full information to be released on Chinese matters, but would permit, or at least could not prevent, the "leaks" from these inside sources, which give only the opposing side of the story. To put it in the picturesque language of the General, he objected to being leaked on by the career men of the state department! At the Monday morning conference with the secretary, it is understood that Hurley was assured a statement of American policy in China, and an end of the leaks from inside the department. Hurley planned to return to China. On Monday afternoon six members of the Congress three of them from California, introduced a resolution to "order forthwith the recall of all troops apphes, etc. from China." BUY CHRISTMAS SEALS The National, State and Local Tuberculosis Associations in the United States At the Monday morning conference with the secretary, it is understood that Hurley was assured a statement of American policy in China, and an end of the leaks from inside the department. The companying statements appear... page 1174 of the Cnogressional Record of Monday, November 26th. This is the straight communist line. The group to benefit in China would be the communist group. The following day, in the face of what he thought was an immediate violation of his Monday agreement, Mr. Hurley resigned. He felt, it is said, that the speech Monday afternoon in Congress could only have been instigated by the sources in the department antagonistic to him and favorable to the Chinese communists. On Wednesday, the secretary issued a statement on Chinese policy, which had it come two days before, and could assurand have been given that the secretary could control his liberal-minded boys in his own department, Amassador Hurley would not have resigned. He has been replaced by General Marshall, brought back from retirement in this crisis. WASHINGTON As Seen By CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS Now the American communist party is picketing the state department, demanding the resignation of Secretary Byrnes and the withdrawal of all United States troops from China. These were the demands, on the floor of Congress, on Monday, November 26th, made by three representatives from Washington, and three representatives from California. The time of decision approaches more and more rapidly in America. Fred D. Hukill Rites Saturday Funeral services for Fred D. Hukill, 62, whose death occurred very unexpectedly Monday morning at 824 West Center street, will be conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. with burial in the Anaheim cemetery. He was a resident of Anaheim for more than 20 years and is survived by one sister, Mrs. I. M. Jones, of Newberg, Ore. Duck Hunters to Find Shooting Fair in This Area Current hunting and fishing conditions as compiled by the outing department of the National Automobile club are materially affected by sudden changes in local weather conditions. Orange county is reported to have good shooting on most private duck clubs. A new flight of sprig and widgeon arrived the first of the week. Shooting on Irvin lake and areas open to the public is poor. Los Angeles county hunters report the best opening on band-tal pigeon season in years around Mt. Pinos. San Bernardino county has a few ducks showing up on Baldwin lake and Big Bear lake. USE 666 Cold Preparations Liquid, Tablets, Salve, Nose Drops Caution: use only as directed!
