Newcomers Seek Farm Information
With the numerous sales of farm properties throughout Orange county and the increased subdivisions for "little landers" in the western part of the county, the farm advisor's staff has found the shorter winter days too short to keep up with the heavy demand for farm information and requests for farm calls, says County Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg.
In his annual report for 1945 submitted this week to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the College of Agriculture at Berkeley, the following activities were enumerated: requested farm calls, 2,648; office calls, 2,311; telephone calls, 3,974; letters written, 2,363; bulletins issued, 7,526; radio programs, 7; project cooperators, 514; days given by volunteer leaders, 2,610; 4-H clubs, ard Pannier during the evening. He also stated that the present membership of this group had reached the high of 450 members, the Anahelm Center being the second largest center in the state.
Director Al Holve reviewed the past year of club activity for the group and went on record as asking that legislature place responsibility of strikes on labor and on management.
LeRoy Aters, member on the county poultry committee, reported that the ceiling put on by the government had forced numerous growers to quit raising poultry, no doubt one of the reasons for the extreme shortage in this commodity.
Cecil Marks, secretary of Orange County Farm Bureau, gave a report for A. J. Schutte, president of the Center, relative to the state convention held in Fresno last month. Mr. Schutte is attending the national convention being held in Chicago. Orange county stands highest in membership in the state.
Herman Freese has been appointed "contact man" for surplus commodities in his center.
As program chairman, Mr. Holve presented Herman Zechary, soloist, and Mrs. Esther Wendland, pianist. Mr. Zechary led the community sing of Christmas music numbers.
Rev. Hayden S. Sears, pastor of White Temple Methodist church, gave a splendid message based on the Bible story of the "Star and the Stable."
As a special treat to the children, each was presented with a Christmas gift.

Local dairymen have until Nov. 30 to file their dairy production reports and applications for payment for the third quarter of 1945. Stephen Griset, chairman of the Orange county Agricultural association urges farmers to file immediately so that they will not forfeit payment by delaying beyond the closing date. Dairy production payments are due farmers in proportion to the whole milk and butterfat they produce and sell. Under current legislation the program, begun as a war-time production measure in September, 1943, has been announced through March 31, 1946.
