AUTO MECHANICS AUTO TRIMMERS BODY & FENDER MEN GREASERS—GASSERS—WASHERS STEAM CLEANERS JANITORS Permanent Positions—Post War Future Work in Los Angeles Apply Today at your local GREYHOUND DEPOT WASHINGTON As Seen By CONGRESSMAN JOHN PHILLIPS A letter from New York City, written July 18th: The Committee on Marketing sent a sub-committee over to New York last Sunday, so as to be down on the Old Washington Street Market about one o'clock Monday morning, when the market is at its best, or worst. I went over Monday afternoon, having been held in Washington by the constant conferences on the week-end embargoes of California fruits and vegetables. This rail embargo, the responsibility for which must be laid squarely on the doorstep of the War department, is not only costing California farmers a million a day, for the embargoed time, according to some figures, but is keeping needed vegetables and fresh trouts from the services and from the civilian population. The reason for it is a simple matter of addition and subtraction. In the last war, when conditions did not approach present demands and pressures, the railroads had 1,892,000 employees. The last war was shorter; there were more engines and cars, and more time for repairs. As of February 1st, this year, there are 1,410,000 employees. 115,000 of these are women, and of the balance only 800,000 (or a million less than last war) are classed as regular employees. The others are new, inexperienced. The younger experienced men have been taken by the draft, or volunteered, and some of course have gone to the war industries, attracted by wartime pay. There is insufficient time for repairs forcing a five-day market. It is increasingly difficult to market fresh fruit and vegetables, and the farmers are aroused. It was an interesting trip. The federal government will be asked to help finance a new and modern market, and Congress should have some influence, if we are to give or loan money, in seeing it is well located, and that a satisfactory management plan is established at the start. Blackout Cause Of Motorcycle Mishap Recently Maxine Rogers of 131 W. Charlres street was considerably shaken up, but unhurt, last week when she was spilled from a motorcycle operated by her brother, a returned veteran, who suffered a temporary "blackout." The mishap occurred in front of the Squire Villa apartments. Her brother returned for her in a car and took her home. He told police that things occasionally "blacked-out" for him. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Hilgenfeld chapel and burial was made in Olive Lawn cemetery. Coal is a base of 85 percent all war plastics. Marie Heffron, Miss Mary and Mrs. Helen Wimberley city were "capped" last evening in an impressive night ceremony at the Episcopal church in Laguna Beach. Nurses aides took their training course at St. Joos hospital. Raymond E. Smith of 10th Dickel street spent last more time for repairs. There is insufficient time for repairs and the necessary odd jobs of the industry. New equipment; and many of our railroaders, are shared with the occupied countries. When the records of this war are written and a tabulation made of its heroes, I hope a special top position will be held for the employees of the railroads, particularly for the employees of the western lines, who have worked under terrific strain, and who have worked uncomplainingly. It is more glamorous to win a medal in combat, but without the railroads the combat troops wouldn't be there for the battles, nor would they have the supplies to keep them fighting. It seems odd that the War department, which puts transportation as a No. 1 objective when we are attacking an enemy, should itself be responsible for a threatened breakdown of our own transportation, by taking away its manpower and refusing to see the urgency of getting to it now the manpower it must have to carry the load. It must be understood that the present emergency, which brought about the embargo, is the result only of the redistribution of returning service men, and has not yet reached the peak it can reach in another six to ten months, with mass movement toward Japan. That is why the California delegation is concerned about the embargo, not only because of present food losses, but because of a more serious situation in the fall, and the present attitude of the War department, which is the same as when our farm boys were being taken; an attitude of having issued an order or made a regulation, and of not being willing to admit a mistake nor correct it. In New York, the buyers from the markets, the retail buyers, were on strike. The retailers said there was no use buying; OPA cellings made them do business at a loss, and the OPA only professed to stop tie-in sales, and didn't do it. This is the first "blacked-out" for him.
