Mrs. Shirley Llewellyn Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Llewellyn of Romneya drive, received the tragic news from the war department on July 24 that her husband, Maj. Samuel Crager Jones, was lost at sea last December on a Japanese ship carrying American war prisoners from the Philippines to Japan. The ship was torpedoed by an American submarine and hundreds of American lives were lost.
Major Jones enlisted in the army in 1940 and he and his wife sailed for the Philippines in October of that year. Along with other servicemen's wives she was sent back to the states in May of 1941.
With the fall of Bataan and Corregidor Major Jones was taken prisoner and in the succeeding years his wife received only three cards from him. They were the official Japanese form cards with his own signature written in long-hand. He was in a prisoner-of-war camp in Cebu most of that time. The last card she received, however, was written on July 10, 1944, and was from a prison camp near Manila.
The family had learned indirectly from prisoner of war returnees that many officers were aboard the enemy ship when it was torpedoed and they feared that Major Jones was among them.
For the past two and a half years Mrs. Jones has been with the Red Cross serving as a recreational director at the Oaknoll Navy hospital in Oakland and is still located there.
Besides his widow, Major Jones is survived by his mother, Mrs. Abigail Bertoli, and two sisters, of Berkeley, Calif.
