Anaheim Gunner on B-24 Liberator Wins Distinguished Flying Cross in WWII AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE COMPOSITE STATION, ENGLAND—Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Technical Sergeant Clyde W. Burch has been announced by Lieutenant General Doolittle, Commanding General Eighth Air Force. The award was presented to Sergeant Burch by Colonel Clifford J. Heflin, commanding officer of this station, at a recent ceremony. Sergeant Burch is a gunner on one of the AAF's giant B-24 Liberators operating from this heavy bomber base. A veteran of many missions over enemy territory, he is taking an active part in the all-out aerial offensive against the enemy. As gunner of the big airplane, his utmost skill and experience is needed in successful completion of a mission. The citation accompanying the Disinguished Flying Cross states: "For extraordinary achievement, while serving with distinction as gunner of a B-24 airplane on numerous Special Operations missions over enemy occupied Europe. Sergeant Burch performed his duties with the utmost skill and his actions while engaged in combat with the enemy have been an example to his fellow crewmen. The courage, determination and exceptional skill displayed by Sergeant Burch contributed materially to the successful completion of each of these missions and reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States." He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe W. Burch, of Anaheim, California. Sergeant Burch attended Anaheim Union high school and Second Villalobos Brother Cited for Overseas Service. A 7TH AAF BASE IN THE GILBERTS (Delayed) — Corporal Arnold G. Villalobos of 125 South Walnut, Anaheim, California, serving with the maintenan forces of a 7th AAF medical bomber group, has been commended, along with other members, his outfit, for outstanding performance of duty. He is a veteran of four major blows against the Japs, having participated with this group in Gilberts, Marshalls, Carolines and Marianas campaigns. The commendation was issued by Colonel Murray A. Bywater, commanding officer of the group. "I have infinite praise for, and pride in, those of our men who make up our ground crews and maintain our airplanes," Colonel Bywater said. "We owe them more credit than they usually give and in many cases we owe them lives." "They have kept our B-Mitchell bombers flying over thousands of miles of the vast Pacific Ocean, and only those who have flown over the Pacific can realize just how vast it really is." "The ground crews and maintenance men have done their jobs well, and have won the respect of all those of us who have had the opportunity of working with them." Pacific War Zone Lt. George A. Griffith, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Griffith of Highway 101 south of Anaheim, is reported as killed in action against the Japs in the South Pacific war theater, according to word received by his parents from his wife who resides in Texas. She notified them by telephone. Lt. Griffith is one of two sets of twin brothers in the Griffith family, all of whom are in the armed service. He was pilot of a Navy Grumman Hellcat, having been in that service for four years. Lt. Griffith's wife stated that the Navy telegram gave no details nor the date of her husband's death. She was the former Karolyn Peaster. He was 28 years old, born in Coalinga, educated in the Orange schools. He was graduated from the Santa Ana Junior college in March, 1943. Surviving are his wife, Karolyn of Texas; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Griffith; three brothers, Cpl. Thomas N. Griffith, his twin, in the Army Air Corps at Ardmore, Okla., Cpl. Richard Griffith in the Army in Italy, and Lt. (jg) Harry Griffith, a Navy air pilot stationed at Corpus Christi, Texas; two sisters, Miss Helen Griffith of the parents home, and Mrs. Vernon L. Valentine of Orange. Sgt. Carl A. Knott Wins Oak Leaf Cluster in England AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE BOMBER STATION, ENGLAND—An Oak Leaf Cluster to his Air Medal has been awarded to Staff Sergeant Carl A. Knott, 25, for "courage, coolness and skill" while participating in bombing attacks upon war plants in Germany and upon Nazi military defense points and communication lines in support of the Allied ground forces in western Europe. He is a waist gunner on an Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress in the Heavy Bombardment Group commanded by Lieutenant Colonel George Y. Jumper, Natoma, California. Sgt. Knott is the son of W. M. Knott, 602 South Comstock street, Whittier, California. His wife, the former Miss Marjorie H. Fees, lives at 225 Peck avenue, San Pedro, Calif. He attended high and his actions while engaged in combat with the enemy have been an example to his fellow crewmen. Sergeant Burch attended Anaheim Union high school and before entering the Army in January 1945, he was employed by Garden Grove as a truck driver. Sergeant Burch also holds the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. Discharged Army Personnel Given Low Travel Rates Reduced intrastate railroad travel rates for discharged service personnel now are in effect on the Santa Fe Railway in California, it was announced today by C. C. Thompson, general passenger agent for the company's Coast Lines. The new intrastate rates are one-way special coach class fares enabling discharged personnel of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps or Coast Guard to travel within California for 1.25 cents a mile or less, Thompson said. To obtain the special rate, discharged service men or women must be traveling at their own expense and must present an identification issued by their branch of the service showing that they have been released from duty. WAR BONDS assure the things you want after victory! Corporal Villalobos has been serving with the 7th AAF in Central Pacific as an airplane mechanic since October, 1943. He has three brothers in the service Rudy who was in England, but in Anaheim at present on furlough, Jose who is in the Merchant Marine and Manual who is in the Coast Guard. They are the sons of Mrs. Eleonor Villalobas of the Anaheim address. Sgt. Steed Awarded Service Badge WITH 37TH INFANTRY DIVISION, Southwest Pacific (Special—Staff Sgt. Charlie W. Steed, 2512 North Olive street, Anaheim has been awarded the combat if fantryman badge for service combat against the Japanese. Steed earned the badge—a silver rifle on an infantry blue field imposed on a silver wreath—for his part in helping defeat Jap assaults on Hill 129, Bougainville Island. Husband of the former Trixie Obar of Anaheim, he has been oversees 14 months serving also in New Hebrides and Guadalcanal and has a brother, Sgt. J. Hugo Steed, 24, who is a paratrooper in Georgia. He received his Aerial Gunnery Wings at Kingman Field, Arizona, in January, 1944. Cpl. LoPorto Ends Jump Training FORT BENNING, Ga, Oct 28.—Cpl. Anthony LoPorto, son of Mrs. J. LoPorto of 824 South Philadelphia street, Anaheim, has won the right to wear wings and boots of the United States Army Paratroops. He has completed four weeks of jump training during which time he made five jumps, the last a tactical jump at night involving a combat problem on landing. RETURNS TO DUTIES AT NEW YORK STATION Ens. Dick Alden, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Alden of 601 South Claudina Street, left last Friday for New York City where he will assume his new duties in the Navy, on a heavy cruiser. He recently graduated from Notre Dame midshipman's school and was the 70th in a class of 850 who successfully completed the training and received their ensign's commission.
