Steps to Peace:
This is written four days before
the election. In the short space of
only eight weeks I have been in
Washington, in England, in France,
in Ireland, in Scotland, back in
Washington, and in California, and
out here I have crowded into three
weeks the pleasure of seeing the
people of almost every part of the
22nd district.
There are impressions of this
eight weeks, at times confused in my mind, now taking form. I had come back greatly concerned over the lack of interest in post-war matters, particularly the problems of a world organization proposed for the keeping of the peace of the world.
It has pleased me to see the increasing interest in this subject. There are few people in England, of any walk of life, who do not have knowledge and a keen interest in the importance of export trade, of the conditions of the peace; of post war plans, and of foreign affairs, to their own country and consequently to themselves. There are few people in America with this same interest and knowledge.
One result is the belief, held by the English for example, that the president of the United States speaks for the people of the United States on this matter of post-war peace plans. This was not so in 1919; it is not so in 1944. No president, Republican or Democrat,
speaks for the people of the United States on a matter of such vital importance; the people speak for

Older boys and girls will be interested in the war and aviation books. A display of old as well as new books will be of particular interest. Another exhibit will feature beautiful picture books.
Each school will be host at the library one day during Book Week.
Be sure your guests sign the "guest books" for a party will be given to the school class having the most guests visit the library exhibit.
A story hour for children will be held in the Junior Library Saturday, November 18th, at 10 o'clock.

AAA AND THE FARMER
LESS COVER CROP SEEDS BEING PRODUCED IN 1944
Total U.S. production of winter cover crop seeds is now estimated at 154,150,000 pounds—36 percent below last year and 22 percent above the 1938-42 average. Most of the decrease in production results from the sharp decline in Austrian-Winter pea acreage.
Large carry-over of Austrian Winter peas from previous crops and expected increases in production of common and Williamette vetch, purple vetch, and rhyegrass, will offset for the most part the sharp declines in Austrian Winter pea and hairy-vetch seed production.

DAIRY RETURNS
HIGHER IN 1944
Returns to dairy farmers will be materially higher in the August-December period of 1944 than during the comparable period of 1943, the USDA's Bureau of Agricultural Economics points out, because dairy production payments were not instituted until October, 1943. Higher prices received by dairy farmers accompanied by increased dairy production payments beginning September 1 probably will cause livestock-feed price ratios to continue to be more favorable for dairy production than for other livestock enterprises, BAE advises.
BITS AND PIECES: Copper wire output has shown a marked increase during the past 12 months, but WPB says increase in civilian allocations is unlikely in the immediate future. Military demands are increasing. The War Food Administration for the last year has purchased an average of more than $8-million worth of food per day for shipment abroad. Record production of 35,666,000 turkeys is indicated for 1944 which is 8 percent above 1943 and 4 percent above the previous record crop of 1940. In the Western States, which raise nearly one-third of the Nation's turkeys, production of the holiday birds is the largest in 16 years. Secretary Wickard urges that our basic concern in planning for agriculture in the years after the war must be with people, not trade balances.
No Anaheim resident can afford to be without The Gazette at the small cost of only $2.00 a year.
