(Dick) Melrose, Anaheim aviator with the US Navy in Hawaii, and recently promoted to Patrol Plane commander, in a letter to home folks published in Shell Oil company news, the firm by which he was employed before joining the service, praised the purchase of war bonds and inadvertently described circumstances surrounding an injury he received during the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. His letter reads in part: "During the Jap attack here one of my flying suits was hit by a tracer bullet, burning a large hole in the back and sleeve. It wasn't until recently that I found a need for a new suit of this type and signed the papers at the Supply department which made it mine. OPENED BOX "When I opened the box and slipped into the new flying suit a typewritten note fell out. This is what it said: "Here is a new flying suit for you. Remember that your mother, sister, brother, and fellow-worker gave it to you by buying War bonds; so use it to its greatest advantage so that complete victory may soon be ours." Take your change in Defense Stamps and assure a bullet for the Axls "We're In It—We'll Win It!" Says Local Man's Kin Fighting Second War “We're in it and we'll win it!” That’s the inscription today on the button of the cap worn by Cash C. Stall, superintendent of Mather field sub-depot near Sacramento, and brother of D. D. Stall of East Santa Ana street, Anaheim. The inscription reflects the spirit of the 67-year-old superintendent who still has the same Yankee spirit he had when he joined the US Army in 1898. He was on his way to the Philippines with the 18th US Infantry eight days after his induction. He fought in 37 engagements and was wounded twice. Besides using both hands in hand-to-hand fighting, he handled the bugle during the war of '98. He was shot at several times while bugling and the enemy marksmanship is evidenced by an old bugle, still in his possession, ventilated by three holes. The third bullet ended the career of his bugle, and Stall had to resort to the use of an enemy bugle, found on the battlefield. These two relics now hang side by side in Stall’s home. REMAINED ON PANAY Stall left the service upon completion of his enlistment and remained on Palmyra island as machinery inspector at Ilo Ilo. His work took him to many places around the Philippine islands, the Bay of Bengal, Borneo, Japan and Cebu. He also made a trip to Bataan and spent several days on the shore of the peninsula. He left the Philippines a year after he left the service. An epidemic of cholera broke out on Panay, resulting in over 800 daily fatalities. He made his way to Manila. After 34 days, over a route that carried him to Japan, Honolulu, and up to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, in order to freeze possible cholera germs, he landed in the United States again. Since then he has been in the engineering field, operating anything from sewing machines to locomotives. He has been in civil service for the last 13 years, eight of which he spent as a mechanic at Rockwell field, San Diego. Harbor Area Gets New Defense Job Announcement was made a few days ago that the American Pacific Construction Co. has leased frontage on Lido Isle peninsula, Newport Beach, the construction of steel lighters or barges for the US Navy. Eight of these barges will be constructed there at a total cost of $8,000,000 and additional contracts are expected today. This firm, located in Southgate has under lease a strip of barge frontage 218 feet in length, with an average depth of 500 feet from Earl W. Stanley, owner of the property. PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED According to plans previously announced when the firm was negotiating with the county for site, the lighters are to be fabricated in the company’s plant at Southgate, the sections moved to the Harbor, assembled and launched into the bay upon waist built for the purpose. The district manager in one of our Pacific Coast offices answered his telephone. "Is this the Bell System?" asked a voice. "Yes, it is," replied the telephone man. The calling person had an important request for emergency telephone facilities needed by the Government. He never did bother to ask to whom he was talking. Just "The Bell System" was good enough for him. He got his facilities. It has been over 20 years since the railroad has used this part of its system for anything but freight service. Now with the Air Center at Santa Ana needing service for cadets moving in and out, the tracks have again been put into passenger service. Freight trains have also been increased with one leaving this end each evening and one leaving Los Angeles each evening. On top of this movement there is the regular beet train through Anaheim each day and the customary orange service which picks up the citrus cars as far down as Tustin and moves them out around noon every day. With the stepped up tempo of Uncle Sam's air training in the Santa Ana Air Replacement center a greatly increased movement of passenger trains through Anaheim can be expected.
