MOVING - TRUCKING ANAHEIM TRUCK & TRANSFER (Est. Since 1873) 24-Hour Day & Night Service Office Hours: Daily 7 to 5—Sat. 7 to 12 N. What Is Your Moving Problem! The motorist who travels at break-neck speed, with the throttle pushed down to the floorboards, may cover the distance between two points in the shortest time possible, but at the end of the trip he seldom remembers much of the territory he covered. There may have been beauty and the drama of life on both sides of the highway—scenes more lovely than a gifted artist's masterpiece—but in the speed-burner's mind there is simply a blurred vision of flashing telephone poles, pasing cars and near crack-ups. MISSES JOURNEY He has made a trip, but missed a journey. He has cut five minutes from his usual driving time, but missed a sunset. In the rush of modern-day life, too, men read more than they think. They skim headlines—and gobble up news like they gobble up distance on the highways. Often the significance of the news is wholly lost. It is a half-digested lump in the mental stomach. During recent years, America has been so busy goin g places that often we had no idea why we were start reading between the lines—cautiously interpreting the momentous events on about us. Perhaps it is time to rid ourselves of habits of mental indolence and do a little serious thinking and analyzing. AMERICAN RAILROADS May we illustrate: Recently it was announced that American railroad men had been gratned another wage increase by the railroad. We do not intend to argue the merits or demerits of that increase, or whether it should or shouldn't have been granted. The important thing is that most of us—unless we stopped to think—would probably dismiss the news with the comment: "Well, I see the railroads finally capitulated and gave the boys a raise!" Or if we didn't approve of the methods used of achieve the raise—a threat to tie up the nation's entire railroad system by a paralyzing strike—we might comment: "It's about time the government stopped giving in to these strike bosses; it's time business stopped giving to, too!" GIVEN NOTHING But the other fact—the overlooked fact—is that the railroads haven't given the railroad men anything! That raise will be paid by the farmers and other shippers—and by the men and women of America who ride the trains. The government and the railreads may have granted it, but we will pay it! That's how the news reads when we analyze and interpret it: for a few days after the first announcement there was a second announcement: The nation's railroads had petitioned the Interstate Commerce commission for increased freight and passenger rates which would produce approximately $356,525,000 in additional revenue annually. That, they estimated, was what the recent pay increase MOVING - TRUCKING ANAHEIM TRUCK & TRANSFER (Est. Since 1873) 24-Hour Day & Night Service Office Hours: Daily 7 to 5-Sat. 7 to 12 N. They skim headlines—and gobble up news like they gobble up distance on the highways. Often the significance of the news is wholly lost. It is a half-digested lump in the mental stomach. During recent years, America has been so busy goin g places that often we had no idea why we were going there, or what we would find when we got there. EXCEEDINGLY DANGEROUS That condition is exceedingly dangerous in a democracy, for democracies are as strong or as weak as the people who comprise them. If the people are rattle-brained, or too busy with their own affairs to care much about their government's affairs, then their government is likely to be rattle-brained, too — and lacking in proper regard for the rights of the governed. With the world's very foundations shaken by a war of such terrifying magnitude that all of us should be shocked into a new awareness of our responsibilities as citizens, perhaps it is time to WE PAY IT! Again, we are not arguing arguing for or against the requested rate increase. We are merely pointing out that if we laugh when the railroads have to knuckle under and grant a pay boost, the joke is on us. We pay it! The railroads probably couldn't operate if we didn't, because the railroads have only the mony to do business with—to pay wages and taxes, for instance—which they collect from their shippers and passengers. It's not the news you read that counts; it's how you read it. Let's start thinking, fellow Americans. It might save us a lot of headaches. Club Carnival ROTARY CLUB Paul Demaree, principal of Anaheim high school, spoke to members of teh Anaheim Rotary club on the subject of "Japan and the Background of the Present War" Monday noon at the Elks club. Mr. Demaree was born in Kobe, Japan, where he lived for 15 years and presented an inside viewpoint on the present conditions. He was introduced by Oscar Renner, chairman of the day. Mr. Demaree believes that the attack by Japan was caused by both the crowded conditions and the militaristic rulers that have control of the Japanese Empire. He also pointed out that the Japanese are fatalists and believe that the greatest honor is to die for their country. “This is one of the hardest things we will have to fight,” the speaker said. CRIPPLED CHILD RELIEF The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Crippled Children's Relief Association of Orange County will meet tomorrow noon at Kibels Cafe, 517 N. Mrs. Johns, whose husband does Little Theatre work in the East, and who is a Broadway actress of some note, reviewed the current Gertrude Lawrence play, “Lady in the Dark,” in conjunction with a numberof other current plays of this season. Mrs. Johns pointed out that a large number of war plays hed been begun but were not as well received as the sort of high class comedy exhibited in “Lady in the Dark.” RENTALS —Apartments WILSON-BEVER APTS.—148 W.
