ANAHEIM GAZETTE Established 1870 HENRY KUCHEL, Editor and Publisher 1887-1935 Mrs. Henry Kuchel Theodore B. Kuchel Editors and Publishers The Anaheim Gazette has been owned and edited by the same family since 1875. Published every Thursday at 259 East Center Street, Anaheim, California. Subscription Per Year, $2.00 — Six Months $1.00 Entered as second-class matter at the Post Office at Anaheim, California, under the Act of March 8, 1879. Lest You Forget In all the bustle of the season's shopping, there's a special thought to be carried with us this year. Don't overlook a gift or remembrance to the men in the armed forces. Naturally, we make this suggestion not to the fathers, mothers or relatives of men in their country's service, but to all their friends and acquaintances. There are probably very few of us who do not know at least one selectee, or an enlisted man in the Army or Navy, who would be pleased and cheered to receive some token of our thoughtfulness. Whether it be a gift, a letter or card you send, that gesture is sure to add a welcome brightness to their Christmas Day, and it will do much to take the keen edge off that homesickness that's sure to be felt by the men forced to remain at army camps, airfields and naval training stations through the holidays. You can make it a cheerier Christmas for the defenders of our shores and homes. Remember them! Rumor-Mongers From little whispers mountainous rumors grow. The Monday morning quarterbacks, now in guise of armchair stategists, are now telling us what's wrong with the Army and Navy. These people, most of them well-meaning, are specialists on "inside information." With no access to information denied anyone else, they will solemnly pass off the most irresponsible rumors as fact. Unknowingly, the rumor-monger abets the enemy. Wide awake Americans will discourage or avoid them. From little whispers mountainous rumors grow. A MILLION TRUCKS More than 1,000,000 trucks are hauling defense goods on highways of the United States today, according to OPM Priorities division figures. This is the greatest mobilization of motor vehicles in defense or any allied military operation. Most defense products are fabricated in several plants and huge volumes of these come from the various points to be assembled at one point by the motor truck route. Thus, the nation's highways have become integral parts of the assembly line of national defense efforts. Because of this importance, the Priorities division has issued blanket orders favoring raw material deliveries to makers of trucks and trailers. Anaheim Furniture 301 West Center St. Phone 2 US Foresters Give Instructions For Christmas Tree Care; Caution Can Be Used In Reducing Holiday Fire Hazards With yule tree buying in full swing in Anaheim today, the US Forest Service had the following recommendations to make in reducing the fire hazard presented when the trees are decorated and lighted in local homes: 1. Buy a tree that has been cut as recently as possible. 2. Cut off the end of the trunk diagonally, (at least one inch above the original cut end). Stand the tree at once in a container of water and keep the water level above the cut surface during the entire time that the tree is in the home. If the tree is not to be set up for several days, it should be kept standing in water meanwhile in a cool place. Treatment with various chemicals such as ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium sulfmate, or calcium chloride, the Forest department found, resulted in serious discoloration and needle loosening, and that no greater fire hazard reduction was achieved than by the use of plain water. Regardless of treatment, the department emphasized, all possible precautions against fire should be in effect, including elimination of defective electrical connections, avoidance of accumulation of combustible decorations, and the banning of was candles from the tree. The Christmas tree should be placed so that its accidental burning would not ignite curtains or other combustible furnishings, nor obstruct easy access from the room or building. That tuberculosis becomes more serious in wartime is shown in the increase of the disease in France recently. Walnut Diversion Plan Is Essentially Same For Coming Crop Year As In Past Similar to programs operated during the past six marketing seasons, essentially the same as the 1040-41 program, a diversion plan for unshelled walnuts produced in California during the coming crop year was announced today by the US Department of Agriculture. PROGRAM PROVIDES The program provides payments at the rate of three and three quarter cents per pound for walnuts diverted or exported. The payments will be made for surplus unshelled walnuts, acquired by the Walnut Control board under the marketing agreement program, which are diverted to the domestic shelling trade or exported. The marketing program for walnuts produced in California is supervised by the Surplus Market- MARKET AGREEMENT Under the marketing agreement program, a salable percentage is established representing that part of a year's total supply of walnuts which can be sold in normal domestic trade channels as unshelled walnuts. The remainder of the supply represents the surplus for that year. The surplus for the 1941-42 crop has been established at 35 per cent which will make available approximately 332,000 bags (100 pounds) for diversion or export. ATTENTION GROWERS!
