Electric Adds Win National Award
Southern California Edison company’s utility advertisements which appeared regularly in the Gazette during 1941, stand today as the best ads of their type in the United States, according to Public Utility Ad-Views, who recently presented the company with the National Socrates award in recognition of their achievement.
The first place award was previously won by the Edison company in 1935, while last year, the local organization was given third rating.
THIS DISTRICT
In charge of the service department headquarters for this district, stationed at Santa Ana, is R. E. Bacon, while the award-winning advertising for the company is directed by R. C. Kenyon, and his assistant, Howard W. Hayes, of Los Angeles.
Newspaper advertising, such as has appeared regularly in the Gazette, has been the company’s foremost medium during the year.
Federalization Of Jobless Fund

tion when he asks by “what legendain moncyss which were car-marked for a specific use can be wrested from the State and employed by the Federal Government through a national unemployment compensation law?”
The unemployment compensation laws in some States, he points out further, are so drafted that money collected through the enabling levy must be applied to the credit of the State or be returned to employers on a pro rata basis. In those States, the tax and all unemployment benefits would cease until new legislation was adopted by the States to meet the new situation.
Thus a good deal of confusion and difficulty would be created; at a time when emphasis on national unity is important. Meanwhile, Federal centralization of Government authority would be magnified at the expense of the concept of union States.
Taking all these considerations into account, it is apparent that this is no proposal to be promulgated in secret, or to be promoted in general terms without regard for details. It is something should be fully discussed if any steps toward congressional legislation are undertaken, so is understood thoroughly by people. It will be a great nuque if the unemployment compensation set-up is to be vitiate what is recognized as a blightish on the old-age pension system. That is, if reserves at present are held by the for a specific purpose are turned over to the Federal government to spend as it chooses the promise to return them are needed, and employer robbed of the advantages they derive from steady employment and low unemployment need.

added compensation, their dividends on accelerated defense production.
DEFENSE BONDS
Hoping that most of the employees receiving extra checks Dec. 12 would convert them into United States defense bonds, Douglas in a personal message to each employee said:
"This added compensation represents the company's recognition of your loyal and efficient services in helping us meet and increase our quota of the national defense program. It further reflects grateful acknowledgement by the management of the important part you, personally, have played in establishing our fine production record."
NO DISCLOSURES
Though federal regulations allow no disclosures or deliveries, the Douglas company’s financial statements reveal that sales of $60,970,000 in the entire fiscal year of 1940 were almost doubled in the first nine months of 1941.
