THANKSGIVING
For over three hundred years this nation has celebrated the feast of Thanksgiving. Since the Pilgrim Fathers set aside a day for this peculiar American holiday, the basic reasons for its creation have increased many fold. So bountifully have the riches of these United States increased since then, so easily have we come to take for granted the wealth of privileges and comforts which grace our daily living that many Americans might gaze with amazement at this country's first Thanksgiving.
What, indeed, had the early Pilgrims to give thanks for? On the inhospitable shores of a strange and lonely land, they had been afflicted with sickness and had contended with cruel, fierce winters. Physical comforts were of the most meagre. Outside their small numbers, there were none to cheer them on or assuage their hardships.
Yet they found much for which to give thanks—the harvest yield which meant no near-starvation would stare them in the face that winter; the fortitude and strength which enabled them stoutly to hold their ground against menacing Indian tribes, bitter weather and physical affliction. But above all, they gave thanks for the freedom they had crossed four thousand miles of ocean to seek and establish in the New World.
Today 132 million Americans can, with far more reason, give humble thanks for a truly bounteous horn of plenty, and for the freedom which is still theirs. Not with gloating, but with earnest gratitude, can the people of this country reflect that neither hunger nor tyranny stalks their land, striking terror into hearts and homes.
Our blessings are many.

California Tax Collections Over Double Those Of A Decade Ago, Says Expert
California state tax collections, according to a study published by the tax institute of the University of Pennsylvania, have more than doubled in the last ten years. Using figures gathered with the assist-
Old Timers Ball Game Ends In Comedy
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1—“Truck” Hannah, former manager of the Los Angeles Angels; “Goldie” Holt, Burlie Horn, Johnnie Rawlins and many of the members of the famed Elks State Championship teams of 1921-22-23.
After a few innings had been played, the ball-throwing contest was staged. The coldest ball player there, age 72, even tried his luck at throwing the ball into a bucket behind second base.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the comedy act by Sawyer Slayton and Novikoff. With Slayton throwing and Sawyer batting, the comedians did a slow-motion act. Then speeding up the play a bit, Slayton threw a strike right down the middle at which Sawyer swung, exploding the ball with a terrific noise. The players on the field immediately lay down as though they were dead. Sawyer finally arose and Roman candles came out of his bat as he stepped up to the plate.
After which Sawyer took the mound and pitched to Lou Novikoff, left fielder, belonging to the Chicago Cubs. Following a ribbreaking exhibition of the famous Sawyer wind-up, Slayton took over the mound duties and just as he began to pitch, a gusher of water spurred up from the rubber, drenching the mound. The umpires called the game at this point with
While the total collections for all states are larger by one-third, California takes a high place among states that doubled their collections. The increase in California from $113 millions in 1931 to $264 millions in 1940 is well over the 100 per cent mark. Nine other states, Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, and West Virginia each showed more than twice as much collected in 1940 than ten years previous.
In nearly all of these states, increasingly larger shares of state tax collections have been returned to local governments for relief purposes, for schools, state-aid for highways, or other activities. State governments in the last decade have become increasingly important as tax collection agencies sharing their revenues with local units. Local governments throughout the country in the last ten years maintained approximately the same level of tax collections, their increased activities being financed largely by state and federally shared revenues.
Nearly all states showed substantial gains varying from ten to over 100 per cent. Only one, Oregon, collected slightly less in 1940 than in 1931. Maine and Delaware remained at approximately the same level.

During the afternoon, several turkeys were raffled off and three autographed balls were presented to lucky ticket holders.
