IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO Extracts From Files of The Gazette Issued Half a Century and a Quarter of a Century Ago. These Files Contain the Only Authentic History in Print of the Daily Doings of the Citizens of Anaheim and Orange County in the Days of the Pioneers. 50 Years Ago September 17, 1891 Never were our streets in such positively disgraceful condition. The effect upon strangers of the large patches of sunflowers is enough to drive them away. Our city fathers should recover from their seeming demoralization and at least have the weeds chopped down. Clean the streets. Yesterday Horticultural Commissioners Perry and Hamilton were summoned to Garden Grove to examine some orange trees on the Gates place that were said to be infected with white scale, the first ever reported in this county. They found white scale on five Orange trees. The trees were in Mr. Gates' front yard and had several other varieties of scale besides the white scale. The trees were cut down and destroyed. This is the first white scale discovered in this county and the thorough manner of the extermination reflects credit upon the commissioners. Billy Dunlap is getting to be the most careful as well as accommodating man in town. Besides being one of the best harness makers in the state, he can tread the boards as a heavy tragedian with a real histrionic tread. Billy has a great future before him, if he is careful. The city trustees met in adjourned session on Thursday afternoon last. Trustees Littlefield Witte and Bennerscheidt present. 25 Years Ago September 21, 1916 The work of paving East Broadway is progressing as rapidly as possible. Scrapers are now grading and leveling the street in preparation for the concrete. A large force of men will soon be at work spreading the base. Manager Werdin came down from Los Angeles Monday to see what the boys were doing. Two or three of the jitney bus companies are arranging to establish headquarters on the lot at the corner of Los Angeles and Char-tres streets, moving from the Lemon street depot. One manager said that one of the other "runners" endeavors to "hog" all the trade, so the disgruntled ones are going to move. Joe Wagner was up town the other day and said he did not go hunting deer this season as his time was taken up otherwise. He expects to bring in a buck or two next year. He has a fine pack of hounds and always takes part in the round-up and drives held in Southern California. Joe is an enthusiastic sportsman and takes keen delight in following the hounds in quest of the elusive copote and bobcat. Joe Hatfield will open a skating rink in the opera-house on Monday, Sept. 25, and expects to give the young people an opportunity for exercise and amusement. Good order will be maintained, gentlemanly conduct insisted upon. Church Services Christ, Scientist First Church, Philadelphia Chartres. The city trustees met in adjourned session on Thursday afternoon last. Trustees Littlefield Witte and Bennerscheidt present. The Marshal reported collection of $362.67 for license and water rates during the month. The contract and bond of Henry Albrecht for the construction of a tank frame and tank at the City Water Works was read and accepted. S. O. Wood wrote offering to supervise the erection of tank frame and tank. Services accepted and compensation fixed at 5 per cent of the contract price. The marshal was authorized to have 300 postal cards printed for the purpose of notifying taxpayers of the amount of taxes due. The city clerk was instructed to make a demand on Orange county for rent of the city jail for one year to August 1, 1891, at the rate of $20 per year. Should the county refuse to pay such demand, the marshal will be instructed to refuse to allow the use of the City jail for any thing but city purposes. Adjourned. We hope our readers will not imagine we were trying to boom a small sunflower in Henry Knapke's resort when we mentioned last week that it was seventeen inches in circumference. Of course we meant diameter, which makes quite a difference. W. A. Beckett, secretary of the Orange County Fair association, was in town to see us yesterday afternoon. He informs us that every section in the county is making preparations to have exhibits at the County Fair. Anaheim should have a fine exhibit there. What is being done about it? Attention is directed to the advertisement of William Boyd's Grocery store, situated in the Backs block. He sells groceries, tobacco, cigars etc., at low rates and delivers goods free. Good order will be maintained, gentlemanly conduct insisted upon. Skating is splendid exercise for young folks. Mrs. F. A. Yungbluth entertained at progressive Euchre on Thursday afternoon. Thirty-five guests were present and eight tables were arranged for the game. The tally cards were in the form of Autumn leaves painted in watercolors and the decorations carried out the same artistic note of autumnal colors. A two-course luncheon of chicken patties, fruit salad, ice-cream, cake and coffee was served after the game. The first prize, a handsome flower holder was won by Mrs. Fred A. Backs Jr., the second, a vase, by Mrs. Welborn Wallop and the consolation by Mrs. Jesserun. The Edison company's bill for electricity furnished the city during the month of August was $872.33, and the gas bill was $59.80, making a total cost of $932.13. This was an average of $30.07 per day, being somewhat lower than the July bill which was $31.67 per day. Dale Quarton and Charles Brisco left Monday for Claremont where they will attend Pomona college. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Schindler, son Roland, Miss Elsie Meinicke and Ben Yorba were visiting Seal Beach Sunday. Little Miss Sara Fay entertained a dozen of her young friends Friday, that date being her eighth birthday. The young people spent the afternoon playing various games, and partook of refreshments consisting of ice cream and cake at the close. E. J. Come, Messrs. supervisors, give us a better thoroughfare for the principal road in the county. The road should be graded before the rains set in. In its present condition it is a disgrace to the county. W. J. Smith of Orangethorpe last Friday shipped a carload of hogs to J. Walton in Los Angeles and received $675 for the lot. The words from I John are the Golden Text in the Lesson-Sermon on "Matter" on Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist. The Lesson-Sermon includes these passages about Jesus from Mark: "And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people... And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them; and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them... And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased." Among the selections from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is the statement: "When we come to have more faith in the truth of being than we have in error, more faith in Spirit than in matter, more faith in living than in dying, more faith in God than in man, then no material suppositions can prevent us from healing the sick and destroying error."
