50 Years Ago
August 13, 1891
There will be a grand opening of the Newport railroad line Saturday, August 15th. The Southern California Railway will sell round trip tickets from Anaheim to Newport at 80 cents for the round trip. This will make a cheap as well as a delightful trip. Train leaves at 9:00 a.m. Returning reaches Anaheim at 4:40 or 8:06 p.m.
A party from here drove over to Chino last Friday for the purpose of seeing the big sugar factory, which is attracting universal attention. Visitors call there in great numbers every day. All the machinery has been placed in position, and it is expected that operations will be commenced on the 15th inst. About 3000 acres of beets will be crushed. The factory will be kept running for about three months, and after that the sugar will go through the final process of refining before being placed on the market. The factory will give work to 150 men.
The case of the Anaheim Water company vs. the Yorbas to enjoin them from the excessive use and waste of water, which was to have been called for trial in the superior court of Los Angeles yesterday, has been deferred for a short time, owing to the crowded condition of the calendar. This case was brought in 1886, but has never been brought to an issue. The recent complications at the head of the ditch make it necessary to prosecute the case.

Charles Evans Hughes, republican candidate for president, will pass through Anaheim on Monday next on his way from Los Angeles to San Diego. The train will be held 15 minutes at Santa Ana on the return trip in order to give Mr. Hughes an opportunity to address the citizens at that point. It is expected that a crowd of 5,000 will be gathered to hear the distinguished speaker.
John Hanna died at his home on the boulevard south of town on Saturday afternoon. There are few persons now living in Orange county who were here when he came to Anaheim, November 3, 1868. He had previously purchased 1280 acres of land lying south and west of Anaheim from the Stearns Rancho, paying $10 per acre for it. The family came down from San Francisco on the coasting vessel Orizaba, and landed at Wilmington, now Los Angeles harbor. They came over to Anaheim in a stage and Mr. Hanna immediate began the erection of a house on his tract, hauling the lumber from Anaheim Landing.
Mr. Hanna was born on July 16, 1830, at Steubenville, Ohio, and died at the age of 86. He was married in that town in 1852 to Miss Martha Rogers. Mrs. Hanna died in 1902. Week at Hollywood
Mrs. George Fendley of 529 Los Angeles St., was at Hollywood last week with her daughter, Mrs. Helen McCandless. Her grand daughter, Joan McCandless, spends the week-end here in Anaheim with her.
Move from Exeter
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller with children, Charles, jr., and Judy, moved from Exeter to Eastwood Ave., Santa Ana, recently. Mr. Miller is the foreman of the Santa Ana-Tustin Mutual Packing House and was eight years foreman of the Rocky Hill Corporation. Mrs.' Miller is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.Kestenholtz of 1219 Diamond City of this city.
Back at Studio
Mr. and Mrs. Guy N. Pitt have returned to their photographic studio at 222 E. Center St., and three weeks' vacationing at Caldwell and San Diego.
Recovers from Operation
Miss Helen Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Taylor of Bald., is now able to be out of school after an operation two weeks ago today.
Pastor at Washington
Rev. Fred M. Essig, pastor of Wesley Methodist Church, has for a two weeks' trip to Washington where he will attend a family reunion. Rev. Grant Smith will in the pulpit while Rev. Essig away.
Three at Conference
Misses Corrine and Bernice Linger with Miss Dorothy Wheeler left by car this week for Caldwell North of San Francisco.

This case was brought in 1886, but has never been brought to an issue. The recent complications at the head of the ditch make it necessary to prosecute the case.
Col. Northam will construct a large reservoir in the foothills above his place north of Fullerton. Its storage capacity will be enough to hold water for a week's irrigation at his large tract at that place.
Notes from Anaheim Landing.
People are still coming and going and there are many campers here who never tire of our delightful summer weather.
Mrs. Robison and her two charming daughters, of Olinda Ranch are spending a few weeks here.
Miss Dora Zeyn is enjoying an outing by the sea.
Miss Meta Polhemus, who has been sojourning at Long Beach for a few days, paid the Landing a visit Friday.
Mrs. Schubert and family have taken the Melrose cottage on fifth avenue for the summer.
The Misses Perkins, Roller and Greive are located in the Moss cottage for a few days.
Mrs. J. W. Landell and her daughter, Miss Daisy, were among visitors to the Landing Sunday. Charley Landell, while bathing in the surf, was stung by a stingray, but is now convalescent. This makes the third case in the last few weeks. Wednesday and Saturday nights find the pavilion crowded with merry dancers. Excellent music is provided.
Agent Desmond of the Southern California Railroad leaves us on Saturday to take charge of the station at Highland, San Bernardino county on the new belt line which the Santa Fe is building from San Bernardino to the new state insane asylum in that county. Mr. Desmond has lived here for three years and has made many friends who will regret to hear of his departure. He is succeeded by J. S. Hill of Pasadena.

Funeral services was held at St. Michael's Episcopal church at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Rev. David Todd Gilmor officiating. The pall bearers were: D. M. Gregory, Dr. W. M. Chambers, R. H. Hannah, H. A. Dickel, R. Osborne and J. B. Rae.
A party of Anaheim folks consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Hamler, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Chambers, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Schumacher, Misses Blanche Mickel, and Clem Backs and Kurt Epstein, motored down to Seal Beach Thursday evening, and spent an enjoyable time at the cottage of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schneider.
Levi Mann of the Mann apartment house on Olive street died suddenly at his home on Monday night. Mr. Mann has lived in Anaheim for the past eighteen years, he was apparently in robust health and his sudden demise is a shock to friends of the family. He was married twelve years ago to Miss Cora McAulay, who survives him. He also has a brother living in Pasadena and a half brother, whose home is at Watts.* The funeral was held at Backs and Terrys chapel Thursday afternoon. Rev. David Todd Gilmor officiating. The ritualistic service of the Knights of Pythias was read at the chapel while the Order of Eagles had charge of the interment at the cemetery. He was buried at Loma Vista.
Trustee J. J. Dwyer, Archer Fay and William Kohlenberger were attending court at Santa Ana Thursday.
Clarence Spencer, prominent orange grower of Orangethorpe and Miss Annie Thomas of Shepard, Texas, were married Thursday morning by Dr. B. W. Carr, at the latter's residence. The only guests at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schulte. The groom is the son of Mrs. M.A.

Company G goes to Santa Monica on Saturday to attend the brigade encampment. The boys stay ten days. We hope they will all have a good time, and keep up their reputation as being one of the best drilled companies in the regiment.

Robert and Shirley Whipple; nephew and niece of the R. J. Mahoneys, left Tuesday for their home town, Blooming Prairie, Minn., after they had stayed three weeks with the Mahoneys at 816 N. Clementine St.
Grandchildren Here
Patty, Michael and Allen Mann of Delano, arrived here yesterday and are staying with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Mann of 507 Zeyn St., until their mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mann, come Sunday to take them home.
Trustee J. J. Dwyer, Archer Fay and William Kohlenberger were attending court at Santa Ana Thursday.
Clarence Spencer, prominent orange grower of Orangethorpe and Miss Annie Thomas of Shepard, Texas, were married Thursday morning by Dr. B. W. Carr, at the latter's residence. The only guests at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schulte. The groom is the son of Mrs. M. A. Spencer of Fullerton. After a short honeymoon in San Diego the young couple will make their home at Orangethrope.
George McPhee, was in Anaheim, Monday. Mr. McPhee is still suffering from the injuries he received two weeks ago when J. D. Lavin's auto rammed his machine at the intersection of North Claudina and Center streets. He had a narrow escape from death and is still limping from the injury to his left hip while his right arm is practically useless.
Tom Baxter of the La Habra Valley Progress was visiting old friends in Anaheim Monday. Brea, according to Tom, is the best town in Orange county, still he drops into Anaheim occasionally when he wants to hear the roar of busy streets.
Home from Portland
Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Hedges of 204 N. Resh St., came home Friday evening from a sightseeing trip through the north with a stop at Portland. Their trip lasted eight days.

Russell Hartley and son, Jack, of Oakdale left Monday morning for home after visiting a few days with their mother and grandmother, respectively, Mrs. Ida Hartley of 312 E. Chartres Ave. Mr. Hartley is the Superintendent of the Oakdale Water District.
Phoenix, Ariz., sister-in-law of Mrs. J. W. Swain of 919 E. Cem St., was honored at the Swain home on Thursday and Friday nights last week with family reunions. Guests Thursday were Mr. and Mrs. W. Rev. Earl Berg attended Senior High Young People's Convention at Idyllwild Pines this week. It is an annual convention under the direction of Dr. Olivia D. W. Cummings. Miss Brianna Wright of Anaheim also was present.

Mr. Grafton Improved
Mr. W. D. Grafton of 207 S. Kroeger St. who suffered from a heart attack August 5 was removed Friday from St. Joseph's hospital in Orange to his home. He is reported to be getting along as well as can be expected.
Mrs. Don Campbell of Manhattan, the former Nel Grafton, visited in Anaheim with Mrs. Grafton before returning Saturday to her home.
Conventionists Return
Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Cone and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Scholz who attended the Lions' Club convention at New Orleans recently returned to Anaheim Saturday. On their way home, they stopped at Mexico City for eight days and enjoyed their trip.

Enjoyed a picnic at the park recently with Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Kerr of 206 E. Adele St. as hosts. Miss Nelson is a teacher in Jerome and is the niece of the Kerrs. She attended Summer School at UCLA this summer.
Tuffrees Here from Alaska
Mr. and Mrs. John Tuffree returned recently from a six week's stay at the "Land of the Midnight Sun," Alaska. Just to prove he had been there, Mr. Tuffree has been displaying a picture of a fish with fur to folks in Anaheim. He also took some colored moving pictures of their return trip.

The Sewing Circle of the VFW met at the home of Mrs. Pauline Zitner for an all-day meeting and a pot-luck dinner at noon.

Monday, August 25, is the date set for the installation of officers of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Santa Ana Parlor. The Grand Officers of the State will be present at the special occasion.

Dr. Dorothy Jordt of 622 N. Lemon St. filled the position of Camp Director at the Girl Reserve Camp at Osceola for the last ten days, returning last night.
Return from North
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Houser of 611 N. Clementine St., returned recently from a motoring trip to the north visiting friends. After their return, they went fishing and camped three days on a California lake.

Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Peltzer of Sevenal, Calif., brother and sister-in-law of Victor H. Peltzer of Herritos Rd. is spending two weeks in Southern California, stopping now and then in Anaheim.

McClelland with children, Peggy and Scott, who are visiting here from Sacramento. The two McClelland brothers’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. McClelland of Santa Ana also attended.
Kansas Guests in Anaheim
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Lester of 549 S. Illinois St., is Mr. Lester’s sister-in-law, Mrs. W. B. Lester of Arkansas City, Kans. She brought her two children, Dorothy and Phyllis, with her and will stay ten days.
Burns Have New Son
A son, Kenneth Allen, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Burns of 213 S. Ohio St., August 3 at the Fullerton General hospital. Mrs. Burns is the former Ida Mae Gregory, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Myers of Anaheim. The paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Burns of this city. The mother and son returned home Tuesday an dare doing very well.
Birthday Club Honors Members
The Birthday Club of Anaheim honored one of its members, Mrs. H.-G. Schmelzer at her home at 118 N. Emily St., Tuesday p.m.
Members brought a pot-luck luncheon and played Bunko.
Prizewinners were Mrs. John Daum, Mrs. George Clodt and Minnie Fisher. Mrs. Hattie Pearson was consoled.
Those present were Mrs. John Molt, Mrs. Ida Kaiser, Mrs. Daum, Mrs. Clodt, Mrs. Pearson, Mrs. Ida Danker, Mrs. Doris Ihrer, Mrs. Elizabeth Groom, Mrs. Fisher, Mrs.Johanna Vierke, Mrs. Ophelia Henning and the honored guest.
Mrs. Fred Henning was unable to come because of illness.
