Air Lines Proposes Service Between Military Centers
Inland Route Through Canada and Alaska Considered Vital
Overnight air service between United States military centers and strategic Alaskan Army and Navy bases over an all-year inland route.
This was outlined recently by Western Air Lines in filing notice of application with the Civil Aeronautics Board for a 2550-mile skyway from Lethbridge, Canada, to Nome and Anchorage, Alaska, via Calgary, Edmonton, Grande Prairie and Whitehorse in Canada, and Fairbanks, Alaska.
In proposing fast transportation to Alaska's $90,000,000 defenses by through service from the airline's northern terminus at Lethbridge, Canada, the company stated that traffic to Canadian cities would be limited to international service.
The route offers all-year flying conditions due to protection from coastal fogs by the Rocky Mountains which lie West of the skyway. Western Air's system, connecting with all transcontinental airlines in this country and Canada, would link Naval bases at San Diego and San Pedro, Southern California aircraft factories and military posts throughout the United States directly to Alaskan bases.
William A. Coulter, president, stated "Western Air Lines for several years has considered extending its operations into Alaska via the inland route. Now with the Russian-German crisis the need for quick transportation of

ALASKA: A Land of Gold and Fur,
Becomes A Land of Guns and Men
First in the chain of army airbases, stretching from Southeastern Alaska to the hub city, Fairbanks, in the Tanana valley, is the landing field located on Annette island. This field required the work of approximately 1,000 CCC and enlisted men to carry to completion at a cost in excess of $1,000,000; the primary use being a landing field for fliers on the Seattle - Anchorage - Fairbanks flight. Considered as a minor undertaking it is, nevertheless, an important link for it not only is usable as an observation station but could act in conjunction with the Sitka naval base, a brief hour's flight away, in observation and patrol work.
MAIN AIRBASE SITE
At Anchorage, 600 miles from Sitka as the crow flies in a northwest direction, is the major undertaking in the defense program on land; Elmendorf Field and Fort Richardson.
In excess of $18,000,000 will be spent on these two projects before they are completed: Twelve millions for the army airbase; $6,000,-000 for the military post.
When completed the airbase will have accommodation for three or more air crop squadrons, with a personnel of 35 officers and 400 enlisted men. This project is considered the last word in such conditions. A composite soil—one of every type of plant by the army—will be stored here. The main runway is feet long by 150 feet wide, crete construction, with crossways also being in place. The of this project runs close to 000,000. During the coming week exhaustive tests will be made weather having all range peratures. To many Ladd Field is considered as the key unit nation's military projects.
The Alaska defensive pro- two-fold in its purpose; major defense line against Eastern invasion bearing from the northwest or over the top via the polar Two—a strong front against "back door" attack coming any sector of the Arctic or either from above the Aleut peninsula of from across the sea, thereby jeopardizing tire Pacific coast.
INVASION DISCOURAGING
Alaska does not offer much couragement to any foreign as a landing base except places which are already in tion. Throughout the entire part of this vast course smooth terrain large enough mass landing may be found.

Experiments Show Hot Weather Best For Weed Control
Dry Hot Soil With High Temperatures Help Gas Treatments
Midsummer with its dry weather and high temperatures offers the best conditions for use of carbon bisulphide in controlling deep-rooted perennial weeds, according to the botany division of the University of California.
Field, laboratory, and greenhouse experiments at Davis have shown that the effectiveness of the gas can be substantially increased if it is applied when soil temperatures are high and the soil is dry.
The higher temperatures and dryness of the soil, he points out, allow the gas to move more freely through the soil and to come in closer contact with the roots. Whereas the gas escapes from the soil more quickly under these conditions than when soil is cool and moist, he added, the greater concentrations of the gas resulting from the higher temperatures more than offset this loss, with the net result that its weed-killing effect is increased.
At the present time further studies are being made by the botany division in all parts of the state to determine the best spacing, dosage, and depth of carbon bisulphide treatments as well as the influence of different soil types on their efficiency.
Farm Bureau Bill Grants Parents Training Rights
Amended School Code Does Not Require Working Permit
“Another legislative victory was scored by agriculture when Governor Olson signed the Farm Bureau bill aimed to preserve rights of parents to discipline and train their children in habits of work and industry on the farm,” reports Dr. Von T. Ellsworth, legislative representative for the California Farm Bureau Federation.
This bill amends the school code and provides that no permit for minors to work shall be required when the work to be performed is for and under the control of parents or guardians and is performed on or in connection with a parent’s or guardian’s premises. This provision is not intended to affect provisions of law which may relate or apply to strictly commercial work.
It also provides that farmers may protect themselves from liability in case employees allow their minor children to assist them in performing farm labor without complying with the permit law. This protection is afforded by the farmer posting his property taking in the defense program on land; Elmendorf Field and Fort Richardson.
This project is considered the last word in such construction, with all building being of a permanent nature.
Fort Richardson is to have, when completed, 50 barracks buildings, housing 5,000 men and officers’ quarters additional. For defensive units there are infantry, anti-aircraft and artillery allocations proportionate to an organization of this size.

DEL MAR SPECIAL
Wednesday, August 13, has been designated as "Anaheim Day" by the Del Mar turf club, with a good-sized delegation of local turf followers intending to be present. Arrangements have been made with the Santa Fe railroad to have train service from this city to the track, the train leaving Anaheim at 12:20, returning from Del Mar at 7:40. Intending passengers should notify the local agent so reservations may be made.

plans for joining the workers already on strike.
Rumors picked up in various sections of the county early this week, pointed at an attempt at sabotage by the union regarding the wage scale of various citrus packing plants in the orange belt. This was pointed out by Clarence Skiles, manager of the Orange County Fruit Exchange in Orange, who spiked all attempts by pointing to his investigation that wage scales paid by the citrus packing plants, including Santiago, were comparable.
"The spreading of rumors and gossip is an attempt to undermine the cooperative marketing movement and to create dissention, not only between the units but between the individual growers as well," according to Frank Snowden, prominent Orange citrus grower.

from Anchorage lies Ladd Field, at airbanks. Here is located a cold weather experiment station, the only institution of its kind for army aircraft. The purpose of Ladd Field is to conduct tests of aircraft under the most rigorous conditions. A composite squadron one of every type of plane used in the army—will be stationed there. The main runway is 10,000 feet long by 150 feet wide, of concrete construction, with cross runways also being in place. The cost of this project runs close to $5,000,000.
